1.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Premier (operator) and Chrysaor are developing the Solan field located in Block 205/26a of
the UKCS West of Shetlands in an area of approximately 137m water depth (Figure 1). The
facility is designed to produce a peak flowrate of 28,000 bpd oil, with a peak of up to 35,000
bpd total liquids.

The base case field development plan calls for the drilling of two sub-horizontal producers,
each equipped with a dual electric submersible pump (ESP) to accelerate production and
maximise total recovery. Reservoir pressure in these producers will be supported by
voidage replacement through two sub-horizontal water injectors. If development drilling
and/or early production data indicate certain upside or downside reservoir cases, an
additional producer and/or injector may be attractive. The wells will be completed subsea
and tied back to the production facility via dedicated flowlines and risers.

The production facility shall be designed as a not permanently manned installation (NPMI)
and will be operated remotely from the onshore control room (ONCR) with the exception of
the hook-up and commissioning phase, the first twelve months of production operations,
and maintenance and supply operations. However the installation will always be capable of
operating as a manned platform.

The facility comprises a subsea oil storage tank, a jacket substructure, topsides facilities,
and oil offloading system (Figure 2). The jacket substructure consists of a four leg design
and all associated bracing and stiffening necessary for the environment where it will be
installed. It shall also incorporate all connections for the risers, caissons and J-tubes, from
the base of the jacket to the top of the deck stab-in points. The topsides facilities will consist
of primary separation, gas treatment to fuel gas quality, all necessary utilities, and power
generation. Power will be generated by dual-fuel turbines and a diesel generator. Initially
the turbines will be fuelled by fuel gas taken from associated gas with any excess gas being
flared. When the field becomes fuel-gas deficient the turbines will be fuelled by diesel. The
topsides include a heli-deck and accommodation for 30 personnel. The oil storage tank is
located on the seabed. Oil will be exported via the oil offloading system to shuttle tankers.

The required offloading rate is circa 300,000 bbl parcel in 24 to 30 hrs. Safety protection
against excessive internal and external pressure on the tank will be provided on the
platform.

5.0 PROCESS FACILITIES

5.1 Design Life

The design life of the Solan Topsides Facilities shall be 25 years, extendable to 30 years
with suitable preventative maintenance and inspection.

5.2 Process Overview

The Solan reservoir will be initially developed with 2 production wells and 2 water injection
wells. A further production well is possible during platform life.

Reservoir fluids will be lifted by the use of Electric Submersible Pumps through subsea
trees. Production will be via individual flexible flowlines (6”ID) connecting each of the wells
to the platform. At the platform the flexibles will tie into subsea flanges at the bottom of
individual rigid risers.

The Inlet Separator will be a horizontal 3-phase gas-oil-water separator. Gas from the Inlet
Separator will be transferred to the fuel gas system, any surplus gas will be flared. Oil from
the Inlet Separator will be transferred to the 2nd Stage Separator, which will degas the oil
further to meet the crude export RVP requirements. Produced water from both the
separators is routed to the Water Injection Holding Drum

Ballast Water from the Subsea Tank is comingled with Seawater, filtered and deoxygenated
prior to mixing with the produced water in the Water Injection Holding Drum, from here the
water is transferred to the Water Injection Booster Pumps and hence Water Injection
Pumps, prior to being injected into the reservoir via subsea trees.

Oil from the 2nd Stage Separator is sent to the Subsea Storage Tank. Oil will be exported
from the Subsea Tank to a Tanker.

6.0 UTILITY SYSTEMS

6.1 Fuel Gas System

A fuel gas conditioning system will be required to treat the Inlet Separator off gas so that it
can be used for fuel gas service. The gas from the Inlet Separator will require compression
to meet the power generation system requirements.

The fuel gas system will comprise of a suction cooler, suction drum, single stage
compressor, discharge cooler, a storage drum and super-heater. The outlet temperature
from the coolers will be set at 25oC, thus avoiding the hydrate region. Cooling will be via
seawater cooled heat exchangers, heating will be via an electric heater.

The fuel gas will be heated to 53oC to give the correct amount of superheat. The Fuel Gas
Drum is designed for a 60second changeover time from fuel gas to diesel supply to the
Solar Centaur dual-fuel power generators.

6.2 Diesel System

The diesel system on the Solan Platform supplies clean, filtered diesel fuel to the following
items, the Dual Fuel Power Generators (A-7001A/B), Emergency Generator (A-7301), Start-
up Generator (A-7201) and the Pedestal Crane (A-9102)

The diesel system comprises of the following items, Boat loading stations (platform east and
west sides), Diesel Storage Tanks (T-3601A/B), Diesel Pumps (P-3601A/B), a Diesel Filter
Coalescer and Pre-Filter Package (A-3603) and a Diesel Header Tank (T-3604).

Diesel will be distributed to the various diesel users from the Diesel Header Tank. To avoid
diesel polymerisation and formation of micro-organisms facilities for diesel recirculation and
biocide addition have been provided. The Diesel Filtration Package will remove solids and
water prior to transfer to the Diesel Header Tank.

6.3 Flare System

The Solan facilities are provided with a single low pressure (LP) flare system. The system is
designed to provide for the safe collection and disposal of flammable fluids from the
following sources:

• Associated gas from Inlet Separator V-1001, surplus to fuel gas

requirements;
• Flash gas from Second Stage Separator V-1002 (currently specified as a
continuous flow to flare);
• Excess blanket gas (supplied by fuel gas) from the Water Injection Holding
Drum.
• PSVs from process equipment and piping;

• Blowdown and actuated vent valves from process equipment and piping;
• Hazardous PSV and vent valves from utility systems that are unsuitable for
overboard discharge;
• Purge gas from process and hazardous utility systems;

Fluids from the above sources are collected in a common flare header and routed to Flare
Drum (V-3001). The Flare Drum serves as a collection and separation vessel for fluids
discharged into the flare system. Gas separated in the flare drum will be routed via the
boom to the flare tip where it is ignited. Flare ignition is via a ballistic spark ignition system.

The Flare Drum (V-3001) will be designed in accordance with API RP 521 to remove
droplets of 300 microns and above at the highest flaring load. The Flare Drum will be
provided with sufficient liquid hold up volume for relief from one well at a production rate of
20,000bpd for 15 minutes. This volume will be provided in addition to that required for
handling the normal occurring loads for the continuous flare users.

The Flare Drum is fitted with an electrical heater (E-3001)in the boot section. The Heater
operates under thermostatic control to maintain a minimum temperature in the flare drum
boot, above the wax and frost forming temperatures for the fluids in the system.

The required elevation and outboard distance of the Flare Tip will be established as per the
recommendations of API RP 521. The elevation will be set by the maximum heat intensity
permitted at designated working locations or by a flammable gas concentration criterion
when the flare is functioning as a cold vent, whichever demands the greatest height. The
following radiation criteria should be used:
Radiation limit
Condition kW/m2
Continuous exposure in still conditions 1.58
Helideck exposure limit 1.90
Emergency action lasting 2-3 minutes without shielding 4.73
Emergency action lasting up to 30 seconds without shielding 6.31
Limited access. Escape time of a few seconds. 9.46

Solar radiation of, 0.79 kW/m2 is to be included in the calculated radiation intensity.

Combustion is preferred to cold venting of hydrocarbons on environmental and personnel

safety grounds, however, the flare system is also to be specified to allow production to
continue should there be an issue with lighting the flare remotely. Under these conditions
the flare system will revert to cold venting. This may also be the case later in field life when
the platform becomes gas deficient and a lit flare cannot be maintained under normal
operation.

Purging of the flare system will be provided by the continuous flare users where possible.
Later in field life as gas rates decline or during shutdown of the oil production the required
purge rate may need to be maintained using nitrogen. At this point it may also be necessary
to revert to cold venting.

6.5 Instrument Air and Plant Air

The instrument air system provides oil and water-free air for plant and instrument use on the
Solan Platform. The system consists of the following main components:

• Instrument Air Compressor Packages (A-3701A/B)

• Instrument Air Receiver (V-7301)

The system design parameters are:

Design temperature: -10 / 50°C
Design pressure: FV / 13.0barg (VTC)
Inlet temperature: -5 to 22°C
Product pressure: 10.5barg
Product design rate: 1000 Nm3/hr

The instrument air system on Solan Platform supplies dry, oil-free, compressed air to the
users. The compressed air is dried to instrument air quality, with a dew-point of -30°C and a
maximum operating pressure of 10.5barg, when the feed air to the dryers is at a maximum
relative humidity of 100%.

There will be two instrument air generation packages (A-3701A/B) operated on a

duty/standby basis contained on an instrument air skid. There is a single Instrument Air
Receiver V-3701 (which is sized to supply instrument air for 5 minutes from a pressure of
8.5barg to 4.5barg in case of an instrument air package failure).

Utility air is taken off the instrument air header downstream of the Instrument Air Receiver.

6.6 Nitrogen

The main function of the Nitrogen Generation Package (A-3801) and distribution system on
the Solan platform is to provide inert gas for purging of the flare header. It may also be used
for purging of air-filled equipment and piping before introducing hydrocarbons, and
conversely for purging systems of hydrocarbons before maintenance work.

The system design parameters are:

Design temperature: -10 / 50°C
Design pressure: 13.0barg (VTC)
Inlet temperature: -5 to 50° C
Product pressure: 9.0barg
Product rate: 20 Nm3/hr
Product quality: 97.5% nitrogen

Compressed air is supplied to the nitrogen generation package (A-3801) from the platform’s
instrument air system (A-3701A/B) at a pressure of 10.5barg and ambient temperature. First
the air passes through a pre-filter arrangement to remove any free water, and the clean air
is then fed to the membranes which are preferentially permeable to oxygen. This leaves a
nitrogen-rich inert gas, with a dew point of below -30°C at 1.013barg, which is stored in the
Nitrogen receiver V-3801.

Nitrogen is piped from the receiver to the intermittent and continuous users through a
distribution network. Rejected oxygen is vented to a safe location where it does not pose a
flammability risk.

6.7 Fresh Water

No potable water production facilities are provided on the Solan Platform, potable water will
be brought on board as required. A Fresh Water Tank (T-4601) and UV-Sterlisier and Filter
are provided to enable a supply of fresh water to the Accommodation module.

6.8 Closed Drains

The Closed Drains System collects hydrocarbon liquids and oily water drained manually
during maintenance, minor flows during normal operations, overflow relief scenarios and oily
water from the Open Drains Pumps. Drains will be routed to Closed Drains Drum V-4901 via
a Closed Drains Header. Liquids collected in the Closed Drains Drum will be returned to the
process via, the Closed Drains Pump to the Second Stage Separator.

Only one item will be drained to the closed drains system at a time to avoid potential cross
pressurisation of equipment. Liquid level in the process equipment will be reduced to the
minimum before draining if feasible. Process equipment will be de-pressured to less than
5barg prior to draining to the closed drains drum.

6.9 Open Drains

A single open hazardous drain system is required to collect rainwater, firewater, wash down
water, spillage of liquids and solids from contaminated deck areas, equipment drip trays and
bounded areas and to recover hydrocarbon liquids before disposing of the cleaned water.

Contaminated drains shall be routed to an Open Drains Tank for retention and cleanup of
oily water. Rainwater from non-contaminated areas should be routed directly to sea.

The objectives of the system are:

• Prevent movement and spreading of liquid spills across the deck areas so as to limit
the extent and escalation of potential pool fires
• Prevent overboard discharge of oil-contaminated water to the sea to meet
environmental standards.

Deluge will be routed via separate headers directly to the Ballast Water Caissons.

Cooling Water is supplied by Seawater Lift Pumps P-4101 (or the backup for this system
firewater pump P-8001B) and is taken-off downstream of Coarse Filters F-4102A/B. The
Cooling Water supply header is maintained under pressure control by a bypass, and either
control valves or restriction orifices in the cooling water discharge of each process and
utilities user. Cooling water is distributed to the fuel gas coolers and power generator
packages as well as any other small users.

The cooling water system is a once through system with returned cooling water routed
directly overboard via the Seawater Disposal Caisson (C-4801).

Cooling water is supplied to the individual users at the following conditions:

• Supply pressure: 11.5barg (~5barg at users)

• Supply temperature: 8 – 12°C
• Filtration: 98% particles >75 micron

Due to the presence of hypochlorite in the seawater, the cooling water return temperature
for overboard disposal is limited to 30°C to avoid chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in
the 25% Cr lines.

6.11 Firewater
Firewater is lifted directly from a depth of LAT-20m using duty/standby submersible type
caisson pumps (P-8001A/B). The caisson depth is LAT-49.5m/-52.0m to minimise the risk of
lifting plankton bloom and dispersed sediment. The pump is to be capable of meeting the
peak firewater demand of 296m³/h (45,700 bpd). As per NFPA 20 the pumps should also be
capable of providing a minimum of 65% of their rated differential at 150% of their rated flow.
The pumps supply the firewater ring main which distributes firewater to the following points:

• Weather Deck Deluge

• Mezzanine Deluge
• Helideck DIFFS (A-8002)
• Various Hydrant Points
