Doctor Cameron:

Today we will be discussing standardized testing. Before you come into the
classroom this afternoon, I want you to think about whether standardized testing is
effective. On the one hand, the tests provide a way to determine whether students
possess the knowledge and skills that they should at their age. On the other hand,
some argue that standardized testing encourages memorization but neglects
critical thinking. Would you say that children should be given standardized tests?
Why or why not?

Enrique:

I think that students should not be given standardized tests. As the professor
mentioned, people say that these tests focus on students remembering facts and
equations rather than thinking critically. I realize that it is important to know those
things, but they don't realistically reflect how well educated children are. Moreover,
many people are quite intelligent and knowledgeable, but they do not do well on
tests. So, standardized tests make them look like bad students when they are not.

Helena:

I believe that standardized tests are the only way to evaluate thousands of students
in the same grade level. Yes, there are different kinds of students who learn
differently, but when you have to test so many students, you cannot accommodate
everyone. Plus, until the end of high school, these tests do not have a significant
effect on their future. The tests show how well they are learning, and how well they
are being taught.
