Multiplexing System
1.03.001 Multiplexing Overview
The Cascadia electrical and electronic system is a multiplexing system that replaces traditional power
distribution devices with electronic control units (ECU) that communicate over the vehicle datalinks.
The ECUs control power distribution to vehicle electrical loads by monitoring inputs—such as sensors
and switches—and coordinating power to outputs such as lighting, displays, gauges, and indicators.
Power is supplied by the vehicle power distribution module (VPDM). For more information, refer to
Power Distribution .
The multiplexing system reduces the number of interconnected wires and allows more precise control
of the electrical system by allowing multiple control or diagnostic commands on vehicle datalinks.
The multiplexing system serves three main functions:
• Transmits multiple electronic messages through the same wire;
• Performs tasks and monitors components simultaneously;
• Uses ECUs to transmit signals in the multiplexing system, reducing the number of sensors
required for operation.
The multiplexing system continuously monitors the status of all input devices and transmits messages
over cabin CAN, chassis CAN, J1939-500k, J1939-250k, powertrain CAN, and assistance CAN. The
individual CAN networks are proprietary datalinks that facilitate communication between the ECUs that
are connected to it.
Refer to Datalinks for more information.

Parameters
One provision of the multiplexing system is the use of Freightliner proprietary parameters. A parameter
is a specific value that is assigned to a feature or function of the vehicle, and allows the customer to
choose how that particular feature or function will work on the vehicle.

NOTE: Third party components like Cummins engines, and Eaton or Allison transmissions,
have parameters that are not covered in this manual. For more information on parameters for
third party components, refer to the applicable service documentation.

Each parameter is assigned a part number. The parameter part number is programmed to the sSAM,
or other electronic components. Parameter part numbers can be found in designated primary modules
within the bills of material on a vehicle specification, but not all primary modules have parameter part
numbers. See Table 1 for the primary modules that are associated with parameter part numbers.
One example of a feature that has parameters is the type of lighting used for the overhead console
dome and reading lights, which are located inside the cab. Step-up and step-down lighting is standard
for the overhead console dome and reading lights, but a customer has the option of ordering theater
(premium) lighting for these lights. Step-up and step-down lighting has no noticeable ramp time when
the lights are switched on or off. Theater lighting provides a gradual illumination of the lights when they
are turned on and a gradual loss of illumination when they are turned off. Separate parameter part
numbers exist for the step-up/step-down lighting features and the theater lighting features. Refer to
Interior Lighting for more information on this feature.

Components of the Multiplexing System

The multiplexing system consists of several electronic control units, or modules, and junction blocks:
• central gateway (CGW)
• sSAM (single signal detect and actuation module)
• modular switch field (MSF), integrated in the sSAM
• CPC3Evo (common powertrain controller)
• VRDU2 (video radar decision unit)
• instrumentation control unit
• cab climate control panel
• door control switches
• engine control modules
• global ABS
• aftertreatment modules
• starpoint junction blocks

Central Gateway
The central gateway is a router for the following networks:
• cabin CAN (500 kbps)
• chassis CAN (500 kbps)
• J1939 (250 kbps)
• J1939 (500 kbps)
• diagnostic CAN (500 kbps)

Refer to Central Gateway for more information.

Modular Switch Field

The modular switch field (MSF) is a system of multiplexed switches that consists of a master control
module and one or more slave modules. The MSF master control module is integrated into the sSAM.
The primary slave module is connected to the integrated MSF, and the secondary slave modules form
a daisy chain that links all switches to the sSAM. See Fig. 1 . Switches in the slave module
communicate to and from the sSAM via a proprietary MQ (message queue) sub bus. For more
information, refer to cabin CAN in the Datalinks section.

NOTE: The steering wheel switch (SWB), stalk switch (SSL), and rotary headlamp switch
(RHS) send messages to the sSAM via a LIN connection, which is separate from the MSF
function.

1. Primary Slave Module 2. Secondary Slave Modules

Fig. 1, Switches in the Modular Switch Field Function

For information on troubleshooting the MSF and sub bus switches, refer to Instruments, Gauges, and
Switches in this manual.

Sub Bus Switches

There are two types of sub bus switches:
• multiplexed or signal
• hard-wired or load interrupting
The primary slave module uses only multiplexed switches because there is no wiring pass-through on
the back of the module. The secondary slave modules use both multiplexed and hardwired switches.
A multiplexed switch position—such as up, down, or not pressed—is read by the MSF. If the switch
signal is used by a controller other than the sSAM, a message is transmitted via cabin CAN. The
multiplexed switch position can also be read by DiagnosticLink. A hard-wired switch position can be
confirmed by looking at it or the component it controls.
Each sub bus switch in the MSF system, whether multiplexed or hard-wired, has a parameter part
number associated with it. The parameter part number follows the switch part number in a bill of
material. When a switch is parameterized, the sSAM reads the switch ID on the MQ-bus (message
queue). If a switch is installed but not parameterized, the switch is registered by the sSAM and a
corresponding fault code is broadcast. A fault code is also broadcast if a parameter is added without a
corresponding switch.
Several other parameters are used to further control how switches function. A total of 7 parameter
domains exist for the MSF feature, which may be found in other feature modules. Refer to drawing 26-

01239 (http://viewcad2010/Drawing.aspx?DiagramPartNo=26-01239) for more details and a complete

list of all part numbers.

Single Slave Switches

Single slave switches are used for the following functions:
• upper bunk light control
• multiplexed switches that control remote air valves
Single slave switches cannot be part of a daisy chain, because there is only one connector on the
back of the switch.

Sub Bus Switch Diagnostics

Sub bus switches have a unique identification recognized by the MSF. This identification is monitored
and compared to the parameter configuration by the MSF. The result of this comparison determines
the absence or presence of a switch, and reports a “missing” and/or “extra” switch fault.

Starpoint Connectors
CAN networks use a "star" network topology. The hardware that connects the different components of
each datalink is called the "starpoint connector." Each leg of the datalink extends from the starpoint
connector to an ECU.
There is a starpoint connector for the following CAN networks:
• cabin CAN
• chassis CAN
• powertrain CAN

NOTE: The starpoint connectors for cabin CAN and chassis CAN function as electrical
termination points, each with 60 ohms resistance. The starpoint connector for the powertrain
CAN, sometimes called a "sharepoint connector," does not provide electrical termination.

Refer to Datalinks for more information.

Function Manages bus systems, converts CAN protocols, and diagnoses ECU connections.

Description
The central gateway performs the following tasks:
• Connects different vehicle communication bus systems
• Determines which messages should be routed from one network to another
• Converts messages between J1939 and CAN message formats
• Monitors bus and ECU functionality
• Routes diagnostic messages between the tester(s) connected to the diagnostic bus and ECUs
on all other buses
• Routes diagnostic messages between J1939-500k and J1939-250k for third-party diagnostic
tools such as Wabco TOOLBOX
The CGW is a five channel gateway that translates data between the following vehicle data networks:
• cabin CAN (500 kbps)
• chassis CAN (500 kbps)
• J1939 (500 kbps)
• J1939 (250 kbps)
• diagnostic CAN (500 kbps)
Refer to the Datalink Communication Structure diagram for the systems controlled by each bus.
The CGW is the interface between ECUs on the CAN networks. The CGW separates the CAN
networks from off-board tools, and acts as a firewall to protect Freightliner’s proprietary datalinks from
"public" access.

Global Variant Coding

Global Variant Coding (GVC) parameters are set in production, and record vehicle configuration
details to the CGW. These details are then communicated to other ECUs in the CAN network.
GVC parameters record details such as vehicle make, model, axle configuration, transmission type,
and tire size. GVC parameters are typically not modified unless the vehicle configuration changes.
If an ECU utilizes a GVC parameter, the parameter value can only be read in DiagnosticLink using the
data stored in the CGW. Depending on the ECU, a key cycle or reset may be required before the
parameter is written to the ECU per the GVC parameter value.

Software Programming
Software programming should only be performed on the CGW in the following cases:

Multiplexing System Page 11 of 33

Fixing a problem with the existing software: In case a new version of ECU software is
needed to fix a problem with the existing ECU software, the diagnostic tool automatically
makes available any necessary software upgrades.
• Replacement of the central gateway: After the CGW is replaced, the CGW can be
programmed using DiagnosticLink.

Function Power distribution and circuit protection for vehicle modules and ECUs.

Description
The single signal detect and actuation module (sSAM) is the primary module in the electrical system,
combining chassis power distribution, cab power distribution, and modular switch field functions into a
single ECU. The sSAM reads input information from sensors, switches, and databus messages, and
drives output and CAN messages. High current Output loads, fuses, and relays are located in the
VPDM (vehicle power distribution module).
Refer to Power Distribution for more information on the operation of the VPDM.
The sSAM has 10 programming areas, each with a unique software part number. All 10 software part
numbers are updated simultaneously during programming, which prevents issues caused by
incompatible software versions.

IMPORTANT: This section provides a general description of the sSAM. To understand a

particular vehicle feature or system, refer to the applicable section in this manual for more
information.

Datalink Connections
The sSAM is connected directly to the cabin CAN datalink. All CAN communication to and from the
sSAM occurs on cabin CAN, however messages may be forwarded or received from other CAN or
J1939 networks via the central gateway.
Refer to Central Gateway for more information.
The sSAM also receives inputs from the following functions, via a LIN connection:
• headlamp switch
• steering wheel switches
• multifunction turn signal switch

NOTE: The integrated modular switch field (MSF) in the sSAM also receives inputs from
dash and sleeper switches via the MQ-bus. Refer to Multiplexing for more information.

When DiagnosticLink is connected to the vehicle, it communicates with cabin CAN ECUs via the
diagnostic CAN datalink. The CGW routes diagnostic messages between the diagnostic CAN and
cabin CAN datalink.

Functional Messaging and ECU Troubleshooting

To communicate with the ECU, unique diagnostic messages are used by the off-board tool during
troubleshooting, distinct from the set of messages used during normal operation. The set of messages
used during normal operation is referred to as functional messages, which are sent either on a
schedule (cyclically) or upon a change of the data on the CAN datalink. Messages used during
troubleshooting operate on a request-and-response basis over the diagnostic CAN datalink. Any fault
reported over the CAN network is routed to diagnostic CAN by the CGW, and can be displayed when
requested by DiagnosticLink. DiagnosticLink can display input and output pin status information,
software interlocks, and allows a user to control inputs or outputs for troubleshooting. This information
is displayed in DiagnosticLink panels.

https://dtnacontent-dtna.prd.freightliner.com/content/dtna-servicelit/dtna/en_us/freightli... 7/09/2021
Multiplexing System Page 15 of 33

ECU Configuration
The sSAM has parameters that can be viewed or changed for vehicle configuration. Parameters,
referred to as fragments, are collected into feature groups called domains. Parameters are security
protected, and may have limited access depending on credential.
sSAM software is programmed using DiagnosticLink, which updates to its same version or upgrades, if
required. The software programming procedure should only be performed in the following cases:
• For a feature upgrade: Adding a new feature to a vehicle may require a newer version of
ECU software. DiagnosticLink will automatically make available any necessary software
upgrades.
• Fixing a problem in the existing software: In case a new version of ECU software is needed
to fix a problem in the existing ECU software, DiagnosticLink automatically makes available
any necessary software upgrades.

IMPORTANT: Parameters can be changed to configure a feature behavior without changing

the software version. While parameters may be changed without changing the software
version, parameter compatibility may not be retained when the software version is changed .
