Topic 1.4 Trench Warfare on Land, In the air, and at Sea Reflection Questions

1. The 2nd Battle of the Ypres is the most important battle in all of Candaian History. It was
the first time the Canadias were introduced to war in WW1 straight from Valcartier and
they made a name for themselves. It was important as the Canadians showed everyone
that they were these Stormtroopers and very courageous. It was the First time they were
in war and they were quick thinking and courageous showing every other country they
won't back down.
2. Yes, the death toll at Vimy ridge was important and a defining moment in Canadain
history. Vimy ridge is important because it was the first time that only Canadians fought
together as a nation with no help from Britian or other countries. This also reinforced the
Stormtrooper name for the Canadians. However, that day more guns, ground, and
prisoners had been caputerd in any other allied offensive on the western front in two and
a half years. The Victory was also a morale booster.
3. No, Canadians today will most definitely not agree with the fatality numbers of soilders
today then they did back then. In 1914-1918 there was War and Canadians were used to
higher numbers of fatality than we are today. Today if we were gonna go into war and our
PM said that 24 000 dead Canadians on the first day of war there would be an uproar in
angry Canadians.
4. The Constuction 2 Battalion was a group of mostly African Canadians who were rejected
and instead would help the soldiers in the war building roads, bridges and deactiviating
landmines in front of soilders
5. The Canadian goverment didnt recongnize the FN, Metis, and Inuits for multiple reasons.
Historical discrimination, limited understanding of what they did in WW1. The
goverment didnt really care about the FN,Metis, and Inuits and that's why it took them so
long to finally show them the respect they deserve.
6. I think expertise and courage were very important in Canadian Ace. Aces had to be very
skilled in the air as they would have to shoot down 5 other planes to get the name ACE
and in WW1 that was extremely hard. The fighters also had to be courageous as the
fatality rates in pilots were very low in WW1 as there were no parachutes. Those are
important characteristics I think Ace had to have.
7. Gas was most definitely the most dangerous weapon to be introduced in WW1. Gas was
very effective at taking out loads of troops as a little bit could kill or make hundreds of
soilders sick. In WW1 when gas was first introduced there were not lots of solutions to
combat it and that's what made it so effective. Also when there was a gas attack the
enemies could easily run in the trenches and kill the soilders as they were worrying about
the gas atack and they just wanted to survive. That is why I think gas is the most
dangerous weapon in WW1.
