2 ZIMBABWE SCHOOL EXMINATIONS COUNCIL General Certificate of Education Advanced Level CHEMISTRY 9189/6 PAPER 6 Practical Test INSTRUCTIONS NOVEMBER 2008 SESSION 1 hour 10 minutes Great care should be taken that any confidential information given does not reach the candidates either directly or indirectly @ZIMSEC N2008 [Turn over GENERAL In order to assist in making preparations for the examination, the Chemistry teacher responsible may study the question paper one working day before the examination. This copy of the question paper must be kept under security at all times before the examination: it is to be re-sealed and locked up with other copies of the question paper as soon as possible. The teacher is strongly advised to try out all the experiments before the examination. The “General Apparatus’ requirements and the ‘Particular Requirements” are printed separately. Itis especially important that the details of pages 3 and 4 are kept secure. ‘The attention of Supervisors is drawn to the fact that the examination is one hour 10 minutes. Candidates are not allowed the use of reference material. All data for calculations will be provided in the question paper. Supervisors are advised to remind candidates that all substances in the examination should be treated with caution. Only those tests described in the question paper should be attempted, except where testing for a gas is necessary. In allocating bench spaces, the candidates must be placed in consecutive (not random) sequence by index number. These instructions consists of 7 printed pages and 1 blank page. Copyright: Zimbabwe School Examinations Council, N2008. 2) General Apparatus 1 In addition to the fittings and reagents ordinarily contained in a chemical laboratory, the apparatus and materials specified below will be necessary It is assumed that bench solutions of the common acids and alkalis are available. Pipette fillers and safety goggles should be used where necessary. For each candidate a wash bottle of distilled water at least 4 test tubes and 2 hard glass boiling tubes a cloth or paper tissue ared and blue litmus wooden splints a test tube holder a Bunsen burner a spatula a dropper a thermometer ( 5°C to 55°C) weighing bottle 20 cm} measuring cylinder plastic cup filter funnel/paper Particular requirements 1 Asa possible aid to maintaining security, the descriptions of the particular chemicals required are given under two headings: (a) overall specifications are given on page 3. (b) the actual identities are given on pages 3 and 4. Materials with an FB code number should be so labelled for the candidates’ benefit, without the identities being included on the label- where appropriate, the identity of an FB coded chemical is given in the question paper itself. 9189/6 INSTR. N2U08 Chemicals Required Ensure that all reagents are bulked before distributed. ‘The chemicals required are described in general terms below. Where quantities are specified for each candidate (shown against each listed item), they are meant as guides only and are quantities greater than candidates will normally need to use. It is suggested that about 80% of the specified quantities should be distributed to candidates with the remainder kept as a central reserve. More material may be supplied if requested by candidates, without penalty, Where relevant, spare material should be available to cover aécidental loss. Each candidate needs the following quantities. FBI 50cm? FB2 10g Distilled/Deionised water 500cm* Detailed Identities of Chemicals Required It is especially important that great care is taken that the confidential information given below does not reach the candidates either directly or indirectly. The identities of the chemicals with FB code numbers are as follows, FB1 isa solution containing 75 g/dm? (NH,)2CrO; and 80 gidm? Zn(NO3)>. FB2 is MgSO,.7H20 Materials which are not coded are as given below. However, Supervisors are reminded that those materials already specified earlier may not be on the list below. () 0.1 Miron (11) sulphate (ii) 0.05 M Ba (NOs)r/ ©, (ili) NaCOys) (iv) 2.0 MNaOH (vy) O.1MKCr0; (vi) 0.05M AgNOs* (vii) 1.0M NH3 (viii) 1.0M HCl fa) (ix) 1.0M HNOs ()—1.0M HpSO.iaq) (xi) 0.3M BaClisgy (xii) 1.0 M Kaa), (xiii) Al powder 91856 INSTR, N2008 (Turn over ‘The materials given above are mostly bench solutions thus should be kept at a central point convenient to all the candidates. NB The Supervisor must carry out the experiments in Questions 1 and 2 during the same time as candidates. Colour Blindness With regard to colour blindness ~ a minor handicap, relatively common in males — it is permissible to advise candidates who request assistance on colours of, for example precipitates and solutions (especially titration end-points). Please include with the scripts a note of the index numbers of such candidates. Experiments suggest that candidates who are red/green colour ~blind — the most common form — do not generally have significant difficulty. By reporting such cases with the scripts, the Examiners will be able to apply compensation, if any is required, thus obviating the need for a ‘Special Consideration’ application for this handicap. = Accuracy of solutions 1 __Alll the solutions are to be labelled as shown and they should be bulked and mixed thoroughly before use to ensure uniformity. Every effort should be made to keep the concentrations accurate within one part in two hundred of those specified. Ifthe concentrations differ slightly from those specified, the Examiners will make the necessary allowance. They should be informed of the exact concentrations. 2 It should be noted that descriptions of solutions given in the question paper might not correspond exactly with the specifications in these Instructions. The eandidates must always assume the descriptions given in the question paper. 3 In view of the difficulty of the preparation of large quantities of solution of uniform concentration, it is recommended that the maximum number of candidates per group be 30 and that separate supplies of solutions be prepared for each group. = Responsibilities of the Supervisor () The Supervisor, or other competent chemist must carry out the experiments in questions 1 and 2 and complete the tables of readings and observations on a spare copy of the question paper which should be labelled ‘Supervisor's Results’, This should be done for each session held and for each set of solutions supplied. It is essential that each packet of scripts contain a copy of the Supervisor's Results, as the candidates’ work cannot be assessed accurately without such information. NB The Supervisor must carry out the experiments in Questions Land 2 during the same time as candidates. 918916 INSTR. N2008
