General forms
3. MAGNETIC POLES: These are the regions of apparently concentrated magnetic strength
in a magnet where the magnetic attraction is maximum.
𝑚 = 𝑞𝑚 × 2𝑙Ԧ

Two magnetic poles, one of which is four times stronger than the
other, exert a force of 5 g f on each other when placed at a distance
of 10 cm. Find the strength of each pole
The lines of force never cross each other. If they do so, that would mean
there are two directions of the magnetic field at the point of intersection,
which is impossible.
They start form and end on the surface of the magnet normally.
The relative closeness of the lines of force gives a measure of the strength
of the magnetic field which is maximum at the poles.

Special cases
1. When 𝜃 = 00 , 𝑈 = −𝑚𝐵 𝐶𝑜𝑠00 = −𝑚𝐵
P.E. of dipole is minimum when m is parallel to B
2. When 𝜃 = 900 , 𝑈 = −𝑚𝐵 𝐶𝑜𝑠900 = 0
3. When 𝜃 = 1800 , 𝑈 = −𝑚𝐵 𝐶𝑜𝑠1800 = +𝑚𝐵

Some Important Terms used to describe Magnetic Properties of
materials
5. MAGNETIC PERMEABILITY: The magnetic permeability of a material may be defined
as the ratio of its magnetic induction 𝐵 to the magnetic intensity 𝐻.

6. RELATIVE PERMEABILITY: It is defined as the ratio of the permeability of the
medium to the permeability of free space.

𝐵 = 𝜇0 𝐻 + 𝑀
𝐵 = 𝜇𝐻
𝜇𝑟 = 1 + 𝜒𝑚
Examples: Bismuth, Copper, lead, Zinc, tin, gold, silicon, water etc.

where C' is a constant. This is modified Curie’s law for a ferromagnetic
material above the Curie temperature. It is also known as Curie-Weiss law.
This law states that the susceptibility of a ferromagnetic substance above its
Curie temperature is inversely proportional to the excess of temperature
above the Curie temperature.

Properties of diamagnetic substances :
1. When placed in an external magnetic field, a diamagnetic substance
develops feeble magnisation in the opposite direction of the applied field.
