basketball player who played for
the Los Angeles Lakers at the
guard position from 1996 to 2016.

 Early years
• He was born on August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia to NBA basketball player
Joe Bryant. His parents chose the name Kobe while having lunch at a
famous beef restaurant in the Japanese city of the same name. When he
was six, his family moved to Italy, where his father played professional
basketball. This is how Kobe learned to speak Italian and Spanish, and he
also became a big fan of soccer as his favorite team was Milan. . In 1991,
his family moved back to the US and Kobe started playing on the Lower
Merion High School team, in his native Philadelphia. In his last year in
high school, Kobe led his team to the state title game for the first time in
53 years with a 30.8 points per game average. Despite earning excellent
grades, guaranteeing him admission to any elite college, Kobe decided to
join the NBA directly in 1996.
 NBA career
• Although he was selected in the draft by the Charlotte Hornets, he was traded to the
Los Angeles Lakers before the start of the season for Vlade Divac, where he
remained for the rest of his career. Turning 17 in the NBA , Kobe experienced a
difficult first three years with few chances to play and limited playing
minutes.With the arrival of Phil Jackson as coach in 1999, Kobe became a major
figure on the team along with Shaquille O'Neal. Three consecutive championship
titles followed, and after Shaquille's departure, Kobe became the undisputed leader
of the Lakers. In 2006, in a game with the Toronto Raptors, he scored 81 points in
one game (the second best in NBA history, and in 2009 and 2010 he led the Los
Angeles Lakers to their 15th and 16th titles. He won the Most Valuable Player
(MVP) award during the 2008 regular season. On April 13, 2016, Kobe played his
last game as an NBA player. He scored 60 points and secured the Lakers' victory
over the Utah Jazz, ending his 20-year professional basketball career.
