I. TO ASSEMBLE FIELD

1. Nozzle shields (16) should be removed on both ends of generator and core locking bolts should be
removed.

2. Place lower half outer end shields (14 and 15) in lowered position using end shield lowering brackets
(13). Protect bolting face of stator frame at both ends of generator.

3. Assemble supporting bracket (1) of field supporting sling to collector end of stator frame (without
cable sling).

4. Insert protective shim (2) into air gap. Grease the inner surface of steel air gap shim (3) lightly with
D6A2C1 grease and place on protective shim (2) so that stator punchings will be protected for entire
length of core.

5. Place shim (3) so that the pulling holes are outside core.

6. Remove all cables from air gap shim (3) prior to rotor insertion, do not leave them inside the core.

7. Insert wood brace (6) between air gap shim (2) and end shield (14 and 15) to insure against move-
ment of shim when sliding field.

8. With aluminum covers (28) in place at middle of field and hitches at (7); and (8) around body, so
that centerline through a field pole will be at bottom of field as shown in Section “F–11”, enter field
into core to position “A”.

9. If coupling shoe (4) is not supplied go to step #15.

10. Raise field, insert textolite coupling shoe (4), rest on shoe block and chock field at (9), and remove
hitches (7) and (8). Remove aluminum covers (28).

2

11. Take hitch at (10), using copper shim to protect journal, removing blocking (9) and with pulling ar-
rangement applied to coupling flange, slide field on coupling shoe (4) to position retaining ring as
shown on view “F–5” or view “F–8”.

12. With hitch at (10) raise collector end of field sufficiently to insert field shoe (5) with dowels butting re-
taining ring then return to horizontal position to transfer load from coupling shoe (4) to field shoe (5).

13. Lower collector end of field with hitch at (10) in order to raise coupling flange of field sufficiently
for removal of coupling shoe (4), return field to horizontal position.

14. Slide field on shoe (5) to obtain approximately 1″ spacing between coupling faces as shown in posi-
tion “B”. Go to step #18.

15. Assemble field shoe (5) (one piece or two) in place (see position A) under pole section of field with
dowels butting retaining ring, and not on step back punchings.

16. Rest field on shoe (5), block and chock field at (9) and remove hitches (7) and (8). Remove alumi-
num covers (28).

17. Take hitch at (10), using copper shim to protect journal, remove blocking (9), and, with pulling ar-
rangement applied to coupling flange, slide field on shoe (5) to obtain approximately 1″ spacing
between coupling faces as shown in position “B”.

18. Assemble field supporting sling (11) to supporting bracket (1) on collector end. Support end of field
in sling, centralizing in air gap, using copper shim to protect journal, and remove hitch (10).

19. Raise turbine end lower half end shield (15) and assemble in position on stator frame. Assemble
jacking device (17) in its proper position on end shield using all bolts. Transfer field weight from
field shoe (5) to seal jacking device (17) using copper shim (20) by raising collector end of field.
Remove field shoe (5) out the collector end.

20. With field resting on turbine end jacking device (17) remove air gap shim (3) and protective shim
(2) through the collector end of stator frame.

21. Assemble lower 1/4 turbine end gap baffle (26) per 182A7269.

22. Assemble preturning vanes (19) (if supplied) to lower half outer end shields (14) and (15).

23. Assemble turbine end lower half inside oil deflector (22) and lower half hydrogen seal (25).

24. Roll in lower half turbine end bearing ring (24) and bearing (23).

25. Assemble turbine gap baffle per 182A7269. (26).

26. Assemble fan nozzle ring segments (21) (if supplied) to lower half outer end shield (15).

27. Assemble lower 1/4 collector end gap baffle (26).

28. Move lower half end shield (14) axially into position on end of frame and assemble.

3
GEK 89504A Rotor Assembly and Disassembly Notes

29. Raise collector end lower half end shield (14) to normal height. Assemble fan nozzle ring segments
(21) to lower half outer end shield, move lower half end shield axially into position on end of frame
and assemble.

30. Assemble collector end jacking device (17) to lower half end shield. Remove field support (1) and
sling (11).

31. By means of the jacking screws in the jacking devices (17) adjust journals to exact concentricity with
respect to bearing ring fits in the end shields at both ends of generator. A hitch may be taken at (10)
or (27) to facilitate adjustment of these devices. Remove field supporting sling (11) and supporting
bracket.

32. Assemble lower inside oil deflector (22) and lower hydrogen seal (25).

33. Rotate lower halves of collector end bearing rings (24) and bearing (23) into the end shield (14 and
15). Release jacking screws (17) and rest field into the bearing (23). Measure and record gas gap
between field body and stator core at this time.

34. Remove jacking device (17).

35. Assemble gap baffle (26) per 182A7269.

36. Assemble nozzle shields on both ends. Lower halves should be held against stator frame section
plate when rolling down under field to prevent damage from preturning vanes. Leave bolts loose
on both upper and lower halves until horizontal joint plates are installed.

37. Assemble field fan blades as stamped, bolt tight and lock, measure and record fan clearance, both
ends of field.

38. Make final tightening and locking of nozzle shield bolts to frame. Assemble dowels to upper halves,
both ends.

39. Assemble fan nozzle ring segments (21) to upper half outer end shields (14 and 15) except for seg-
ments extending beyond horizontal joint between upper and lower halves.

40. Assemble fan preturning vanes (19), (if supplied) to upper half outer end shields, except for those
that will block access between outer end shield hand holes and internal joint bolts.

41. At assembly of upper half outer end shields (14 and 15), remove weight of generator field from bear-
ings (23) to allow proper alignment of dowels and bolts. Assemble all dowels and bolts in shield
halves prior to reloading bearings. Assemble inside oil deflectors (22) and hydrogen seal casing (25)
to both ends in that order.

42. Through the manholes provided in outer end shields (14 and 15), assemble the two horizontal joint
plate bolts at the back of the shields.

43. Assemble remaining fan nozzle ring segments (21) and fan preturning vanes (19) (if supplied) to
outer end shields (14 and 15) using hand holes.

44. Assemble upper half bearings (23) on journals, bolt together and assemble bearing caps with upper
half bearing rings (24) and outer oil deflectors both ends (make insulation test connections at collec-
tor end).

4
Rotor Assembly and Disassembly Notes GEK 89504A

45. Assemble alignment device to collector and turbine end shields.

46. Fill sealing grooves of outer end shield horizontal joint plates and bolting flanges with suitable com-
pound applied through tapped holes provided in the shields for this purpose.

II. TO REMOVE GENERATOR FIELD

1. Remove alignment device from turbine and collector end shields. Remove vibration probe.

2. Remove outer oil deflectors, bearing caps, bearing rings (24) and bearings (23) (upper half), both
ends.

3. Remove upper half hydrogen seal casings (25), inside oil deflectors (22) and fan nozzle ring seg-
ments (21) both ends.

4. Remove upper half end shields (14 and 15) on both ends. (Internal joint bolts [two] must be removed
through access holes before shields can be raised).

13. Place protective shim (2) and air gap shim (3) in stator frame core gap, with inside only of (3) pre-
viously greased with D6A2C1. To prevent any core damage by accidental shifting of air gap shim
(3), remove all pulling cables from shim.

14. Insert wood brace (6) between air gap shim (2) and end shield to insure against movement of shim
when sliding field.

15. Rotate field so pole sections will be on vertical centerline.
