Q1. Simplify the following:

(a) 6x + 3y – y + 10x (b) 7 – a + 4b – 6a + 2b – 1 (c) 4x2 + 2x – 2 – 3x – 2x2 + 1
(d) 8a + 4a – a – a
3 2 4 2
(e) 9cd2 + 4d2c – 5cd2 + 2c2d (f) 8xy + 7x2y – 5xy2 + xy – 6x2y – y2x

Q2. Expand and simplify: (a) 3(2x – 4) (b) 6x(3x – 2) (c) 5(2x – 3) – 4(1 – 3x)

Q3. Solve the following equations:

(a) 5x – 3 = 32 (b) 10x + 2 = 16 (c) 2 + 7x + 6 = 11 + 5x (d) 8x – 4 – 3x = 7(3x – 2)

Q4.
(a) Tom thinks of a number n. He doubles the number and then adds 8. The result is 26. Find the value of n.

(b) Daniel went shopping and spent £x. His brother Harold spent £14 more than this. Together in total they
spent £82. Find the amount that Harold spent.

(c) Doubling a number and adding 20 gives the same answer as multiplying the number by 6 and taking 4
away. Find the unknown number.

(d) 6 is taken from a number x and the answer is doubled. The same result is found if the number x is divided
by 2. Find the value of x.

Q5. A shop sells toilet rolls in small packs and big packs.
A big pack costs £b. A small pack costs £3 less than a big pack.
Write down an expression for the total cost T, of 5 big packs and 3 small packs of toilet rolls.

Q6. Given that x = – 2, y = 2 and z = – 3

Find the value of P:
(a) P = xyz (b) P = 2x – 3z (c) P = 2x3 + z2 (d) P = y(z – x) (e) P = xz – 3x2

Q7. The diagram shows a square and a triangle.

The perimeter of the square is the same as the perimeter of the triangle.
