Topper Tips
Give a fixed time per Question
All your months of hard work culminates into your 3 hours performance. One
technique that you should apply in your exam paper is to constrain yourself to a
certain number of minutes per question type. If you cross that time, mark that
question and move to the next one. This way you will attempt the whole paper in
time and then get back to questions that you marked for the final attempt.
New Competency-based Qs (CBQs)
Look for specific terms like Identify, Justify, Comment, Elaborate, Analyse, etc. during
the reading time. These questions are designed to test your analytical, evaluating and
out-of-the-box thinking, in which you must always do brainstorming.
• In the Literature section, you need to have a solid understanding of the
Chapters and language tools for such questions.
• In the Reading and Literature sections, CBQs are asked to test your inference
and critical thinking skills.
• Don’t rush into answering Literature Long Answer Questions. Give them
some thought to properly understand the requirement and then frame your
answer.
Choose Questions Wisely
Choose the questions with choices wisely. Don’t attempt questions in haste. Read the
questions at least twice and attempt the ones you know well.
Word Limit and Format
Never digress from the main answer. Follow the word limit and stick to the point so it
is easier for the paper checker to allot maximum marks. For Writing questions, strictly
follow the word limit and format of the letter or paragraph as per the latest CBSE
guidelines.
Focus on Tone and Handwriting
Always write your answers in a clean and legible handwriting. Draw a line after
each answer to indicate the end or beginning. Also, your style and tone must be
appropriate as per the question’s requirements.
Highlight the Important Points
Always underline the important and main points in your answer. It will help the
examiner in evaluationg your answer better and also help you in scoring good marks.
Save the Last 10 Minutes!
Revision time is a must to have (at the end) to achieve these things:
• Attempt the questions you have left or are not 100% sure about
• Check if any question in left unattempted
• Ensure the correct options are picked in the Objective question

Focus Points
Since CBSE has brought in a major overhaul in paper pattern, our experts at Educart decided to prepare
a comprehensive guide for you to focus on what will be asked in the paper (question-wise) and how
best to tackle those questions so that you don't lose out on some easy marks. These focus points will
be your guide to a perfect score.

Objective Types
Inference-based MCQ’s/Objectives, learn the types and how to answer them.
(i) Use the Skimming and Scanning technique (Look for the answer as you read)
First, quickly look at the type and style of questions asked for 2 minutes and then read the
passage. Underline the difficult words and identify the lines related to the questions.
(ii) Make the reading time count and solve the passage
Try to make the most of the 15 minutes reading time allotted to you by reading both the passages,
going through their MCQs/Objectives and pointing out their answers. Mark those questions which
you are not sure of the answer for, to look focus on them later.
(iii) Read the questions first, make sure that you understand the question
Read the questions thoroughly and their review the options. Always try to understand the essence
of the question, . For objective types, always try to relate your answers to the information given in
the passage. Even if the question asks for your opinion, never go beyond the scope of the passage.
(iv) The MCQ’s /Objectives are based on the essence of a paragraph, read the specific paragraph
carefully.
From your general reading of the text, you may be able to make a reasonable prediction of the
right answer to some questions. For MCQs, try to figure out the correct meaning option by option.
For Objectives, try to connect the dots of information given in the passage by re-reading the
specific paragraph.

Techniques to Solve MCQ's /Objectives of the Passages/Extracts

(i) Read the passage
Read the passage at first stance quickly and make sure to make a note of some key points
and words, for example, some names or dates or any quotes that are given. There can be some
examples also given. Now go through the questions quickly ..
(ii) Think and Answer in your mind first
Once you have read the question, think of the best answer and then read the options, this will
ensure that you do not miss out on the correct answer.
(iii) Eliminate the incorrect answers
Eliminate the options that you are sure are incorrect before selecting the option that you believe
is the correct answer.
Using the process of elimination i.e., crossing out all the incorrect answers helps you to then focus
on the remaining answers. This not only saves time but also increases your likelihood of selecting
the correct answer.

Focus Points 1

Click here to buy latest Educart books on Amazon - https://amzn.to/46wXNBr

(iv) Select the best answer
Most of the time more than one option will seem correct, but there is an ideal answer that the
evaluator is looking for. It is important to select the best answer. To select the correct answer go
through the options carefully. Now again move back to in the passage where the context of the
question is mentioned. Try to absorb the context and then select the most appropriate answer.
(v) Answer the questions you know first
This not only saves time but also boosts your confidence.
(vi) Look out for these words
Look for the words not, sometimes, always, and never. An answer with the word ‘always’ must be
irrefutable. If you can find a single counter example, then the answer is not correct. The same holds
true for the word ‘never’. If an option includes never in a single counter example this indicates the
option is not correct.
(vii) As they say go with your first choice--but not always
It is best to stick with the answer you first chose (go with your gut instinct) after reading the
question. This doesn’t mean that you will always get the answer correct or your first answer choice
is necessarily the correct answer. The options provided will often include the most common wrong
answers among the choices that may seem logical but are ultimately incorrect. So, choose with
caution.
(viii) All of the above and None of the above
If the question has All of the above and None of the above answer choices, do not select All of the
above if you are pretty sure that any one of the answers provided is incorrect. The same applies
for None of the above; if you are confident that at least one of the answer choices is true.
(ix) If two choices appear to be correct
If, with an All of the Above option, two other options seem correct, then it’s probably the correct
choice.
(x) For the vocabulary question
Look at the paragraph mentioned, infer and identify the synonyms or antonyms. If you do not
know the word, read the referred paragraph again. Try to infer the word’s meaning in the sense it
is used in the passage. Now look for the closest match.
(xi) Question on context
To find the context of the passage, you need to understand the central idea of the passage as a
whole and not one or two paragraphs. Now read all the options and find words in each option that
are very close to this central idea. That will be your correct answer.
(xii) Title of the passage
Title of the passage should be short and innovative. It should give an idea about the theme of the
passage in two or three words. So provide a title that matches the central idea and is also hard
hitting.
(xiii) True/False/Not Given Questions
These questions have their answers within the passage. If the given phrase or statement matches
with the information given, it is true, if not, it is false. If, in case, no such information is given in the
passage anywhere, Not Given is the right answer.
(xiv) Personality traits or characteristics of the writer, narrator or other characters.:
In such questions, it is better to understand the real feel of what is being said. Try to absorb the true
emotions and then select the correct option or write it down. If a person has a positive attitude,
provide a word that depicts optimism or positive traits and vice versa.
