THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR:

Political tension: why?

Economic differences:
 North:
- industrialised,
- had a mainly white population (white immigrants from
Europe)
 South:
- Relied on plantations of cotton and tobacco. (and on slaves!)
- The population was formed by a high number of black slaves.
 Political party: the REPUBLICAN PARTY (formerly the WHIGS)
They wanted slavery to be abolished in EVERY state.
Their candidate: Abraham Lincoln, won the elections in 1860

Result: 11 states of the SOUTH seceded and formed the Confederate

States of America, with president Jefferson Davis (the secession
lasted from 1861 to 1865)

Lincoln negated the right to secede: the civil war broke out!

 After 4 years, the NORTH wins, in 1865:

 Lincoln was assassinated (O Captain! My Captain!, Whitman)

 USA remains united
 Slavery was abolished, with the 13th amendment to the
Constitution.

AMERICA AFTER THE CIVIL WAR

Differences between the North and the South continued to exist.

 NORTH: the war costed the death of 625,000 lives.

 SOUTH: was devastated, and its economy collapsed.
It was one of the most destructive conflicts between the Napoleonic
wars and World War II.
