Christopher Columbus is generally credited with discovering the Bahamas in 1492, during his
first voyage to the New World on behalf of Spain. The islands were inhabited by the Lucayan
Indians, who settled there about 800 years earlier. Columbus's arrival marked the beginning of
European colonization of the Americas, exploring islands such as San Salvador (present-day
Watling Island) and others. The Spanish colonized the Bahamas in the late 17th century, after
the expulsion of the British. Under Spanish control until 1648, the Bahamas were ceded to the
British in the Treaty of Madrid, becoming an important center for the slave trade in the 18th
and 19th centuries. Today, the Bahamas is an independent country and popular tourist
