37. Read the following information source and answer the questions that follow: (4)
The earth’s crust is the major source of metals. Seawater also contains some soluble salts such as sodium
chloride, magnesium chloride, etc. The elements or compounds, which occur naturally in the earth’s crust,
are known as mineral. At some places, minerals contain a very high percentage of a particular metal and the
metal can be profitably extracted from it. These minerals are called ores. Some metals are found in the
earth’s crust in the free state. Some are found in the form of their compounds.

(b) How is mercury metal obtained from cinnabar? Write chemical equations.

39. A student was asked to perform an (4)


experiment to study the force on a current
carrying conductor in a magnetic field. He
took a small aluminium rod AB , a strong
horse-shoe magnet, some connecting wires,
a battery and a switch and connected them
as shown. He observed that on passing
current, the rod gets displaced. On reversing
the direction of current, the direction of
displacement also gets reversed. On the
basis of your understanding of this
phenomenon, answer the following
questions:
