Each study is designed to provide o| inal and challenging music that will enable the new student to progress and develop in many areas such as tonguing, legato, rhythm, breath control and melodic phrasing. The individual studies may be used for daily Practice or as unaccompanied solo recital pieces. Many of the studies contain a brief introduction, melodies introduced in ABA structure and a coda section. Care has been taken to evoid extreme registers and dif: ult inter vals, However, the student will encounter a variety of rhythms and tonalities. Traditional scale step and chorale melodies are contrasted with contemporary styles. Breathing places have been carefully marked and should be observed. The player should take deep, full breaths even for short phrases since this will help in the production of a rich, full sound. Dynamic markings should also be observed and care must be taken not to break the phrases. Metronome indictions are suggested as a guide for a finish- ed performance.
