Importanceof CPECinSouthAsian region:

 Pak-ChinaeconomiccorridorCPECisthemost significant project asitwouldcollaboratorinanewera of

economic progress and prosperity for both countries and would benefit this region as well

asthewholeworld.EconomiccorridoroffersbrightfuturetoPakistanandChinaandinvestorsofbothcountri

esshouldtakeadvantageofthisopportunityformakeinvestmentandstartjointventures.

 After its completion, China would have access to the Middle East and Africa, through the

GwadarPort of Pakistan. In exchange, China will start the development projects in Pakistan and

will helpPakistantogetridofthe energycrisis.Hence, theeconomyofPakistan willgetestablished.

 The 40% of the world's oil is extracted from the Gulf region and for its transportation, Persian

Gulfisbeing used.So,Chinawantsto bethepart ofthistrade,by usingGwadarPort.Beside this,China

will look after the activities of India and America in the IndusOcean.When the corridor

isconstructed, it will expand the number of trade routes between China, the Middle East and

Africa.Thecorridorwill"serveasadriverforconnectivitybetweenSouthAsiaandEastAsia.Itwillplaya

crucial role in regional integration of the 'Greater South Asia', which includes China,

Iran,Afghanistan, and stretches all the way to Myanmar. In order to make the CPEC operational,

theChinese government has set up a special economic zone in the historical city of Kashgar, the

bordercitybetweenChinaandPakistan.

ChallengesPakistancanfaceinfuture:

Inmyopinion,asthemanyopportunitiesthatCPECpotentiallyaffords,clearlytherearechallengestoowhichPakista

ncanfaceinfuture followings:

1. For CPEC to succeed in the first place Pakistan’s political and social governance is vital. Almost

allof Pakistan’s political parties are in support of CPEC. But, with the largenumber of

foreigninvestments expected, there must be the fair and efficient allocation of development

benefits. Thiswillbe a testofPakistan’spoliticalandsocialgovernancecapabilities.

2. Security will remain a challenge. For now, the Pakistani government and military have

arrangedmore than 10,000 security forces to protect the people and projects of CPEC while a long-

term andsustainable securitymechanismis built.

3. Thereisgeopolitics.ThecomplaintsthatChina’spromotionofCPECshapesthedistinctionbetweenpolitic

al strategyand commercialinterestsdemonstrate thattheothermainplayersintheregionlikeIndia may

try to contain CPEC and dismiss the potential cooperation opportunities brought by theproject.

With the concern that an empowered Pakistan will threaten India, India may

provokePakistan,trappingthetwostatesintraditionalhostilitiesandlosingthefocusoneconomicdevelop

ment.
