LONG QUIZ Part I SOLUTION (General Engineering)
ChE 426:ChE Applications with Comprehensive Examination
2nd Semester 2021 -2022

Name: Section: Date: Score:

GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Strictly no ERASURES in the answer sheet. Write the letter of your choice
in the answer sheet provided. You may use the questionnaire as scratch. Good luck!

1. The concession stand at SM Cinema City sells popcorn in three sizes: large, super, and jumbo.
One day, SM Cinema City sold 240 bags of popcorn and the ratio of large to super to jumbo was
8:17:15. How many super bags of popcorn were sold that day?
Given:
240 bags of popcorn
8 large bags of popcorn; 17 super bags of popcorn; 15 jumbo bags of popcorn

Solution:
Let 8x, 17x, 15 x be the number of large, super, and jumbo bags
8x + 17x + 15x = 240
x=6

17x
17(6) = 102

2. Naneth and Rhoda can finish a job together for 5 hrs. If Naneth can do the job working alone in 8
hrs, what percent of the job Rhoda do in 5 hours?
Given:
Finish a job together= 5 hours
Let A=Naneth ; B= Rhoda

Solution:
Portion of work by A = 5/8 = 0.625
Portion of work by B = 1-0.625 = 0.375 x 100%
B = 37.5%
3. A theatre seats 100 people. Admission is P5 for men, P1 for the ladies and 5 centavos each for the
children. How many children should be there in a group of men, women and children in order to
fill every seat and take in just P100.

Solution:
Let m= number of men; w= number of women ; c= number of children
M+w+c =100
5m+1w+0.5c = 100

If c=80; m=10; w=10

80+10+10 = 100 people

5(10)+1(10)+0.5(80) = P100
Hence, 80 children

4. Find the sum of the series 1-½ + ¼ - ⅛ + 1/16 + ….

Solution:
a= 1 ; r = -½

Sn = a/1-r
Sn = 1/1- (-½)
Sn = 2/3

5. An observer wishes to determine the height of a tower. He takes sight at the top of the tower from
points A and B which are 50 ft apart, at the same elevation,and on a direct line with the tower.
The vertical angle at point a is 30° and at point B is 40. The height of the tower is

Solution:
Let h = height of the tower
x= distance between B and tower

From point A,
h
tan30=
50+ x
50 + x = 1.732h
x= 1.732h-50 (eqn 1)

From point B,
h=x * tan 40
h=(1.732h-50) *0.839
h= 1.4533h-41.9549
14.9549
h= = 92.54 ft
0.4533

proportion 1:2:4. Find the side opposite the smallest triangle.
Given:
Sides of the triangle = 1x ; 2x ; 4x
Let a = 1x ; b = 2x ; c = 4x
P=100 in

Solution:
P= x+2x+4x
100=7x

x=100/7
2x = 200/7
4x = 400/7

100/7 = 14.28 19.80 in

8. If the length of each edge of a cube is increased by 3 cm, its volume is increases by 387 cm 3. Find
the length of each edge of the original cube.
A. 5 cm

Solution:
Let l= length of cube
l= 5 cm
v= 53 = 125

5 +3 = 8cm
v= 83 = 512

512-125= 387 cm3

Hence, l=5cm

s= 5 cm; then s3 = 125

11. In a roadwork, 12 laborers could finish it in 17 days. After 11 days, 5 laborers quit the work and
are not replaced until 4 days. How many more laborers should be added to complete the job on
time?
Solution:
12 laborers in 17 days: 12 * 17=204 laborers-days
11 days, 11*12 = 132 laborers-days
Over the next 4 days= 4*7 = 28 laborers-days
Thus in 15 days, 160 laborers-days

Remaining 44 laborers-days will need 44/2 = 22 laborers.

22-7 = 15 laborers
