Overview of Environment & Safety
• As a developing country, Philippines had pledged to reduce
GHG emissions by 75% by 2030 under Nationally Determined
Contribution of the Paris Agreement of UNFCCC

• Energy sector is a major contributor with moratorium on new

coal power plants and raising renewable energy (RE) targets
to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040

• Major Philippine conglomerates Ayala Corp, SM Prime, San

Miguel Corp, First Gen, JG Summit, etc. have pledged to
achieve net zero carbon emission by 2050

It sets ambitious waste reduction targets, necessitating
transformative, system-wide actions and large-scale
implementation for large companies
Legislative & Policy Updates
• Renewable Energy (RE) Act or RA 9513 established the
Renewable Energy Market (REM) in the Philippines. The
implementation rules are updated to support the country’s
objective to raise the RE ratio in the country’s energy mix.
Objectives of the REM are to:

❖ Establish a fair & transparent market trading of RE Certificates (RECs)

❖ Ensure level playing field for all participants
❖ Ensure REC prices are governed by supply and demand
❖ Ensure REC prices are, in the long-term, reflective of benefits of RE
generation in the Philippine electricity system
Adaptation, Mitigation and Supporting Programs

• Philippine government entities given three (3) years from

2023 to install minimum 20% of electricity requirements from
solar or equivalent renewable energy (RE) technology

• Philippines recorded Php 6.8 billion worth of energy efficiency

project investments from private sector in 2022

• Private sector will invest in 3,581 MW new RE capacities to

deliver energy for period 2024-2026

• Use of sustainable aviation fuel or SAF (from non-petroleum

feedstocks) to decarbonize the country’s aviation sector
Industry Activities for Environment & Safety

• Green Steel - SteelAsia is investing in several new minimills

which will use 100% scrap & renewable electricity to produce
green steel with lowest carbon emission

• Waste Heat Recovery - SteelAsia is investing in a new Consteel

scrap preheating technology at Lemery EAF Meltshop to
reduce power consumption & carbon emission
