Death is the irreversible cessation of all biological functions that sustain an organism.

For
organisms with a brain, death can also be defined as the irreversible cessation of functioning of
the whole brain, including the brainstem. Brain death is sometimes used as a legal definition of
death. The remains of a former organism normally begin to decompose shortly after death. Death
is an inevitable process that eventually occurs in all organisms. Some organisms, such
as Turritopsisdohrnii, are biologically immortal. However, they can still die from means other
than aging.
Death anxiety is a conscious or unconscious psychological state resulting from a defense
mechanism that can be triggered when people feel threatened by death. The North American
Nursing Diagnosis Association defines death anxiety as a feeling of unsafety, anxiety, or fear
related to death or near-death.
Death anxiety refers the fear of and anxiety related to the anticipation, and awareness, of dying,
death, and nonexistence. It typically includes emotional, cognitive, and motivational components
that vary according to a person's stage of development and sociocultural life experiences.
