G. S. Ghurye:

Govind Sadashiv Ghurye, was a prominent Indian sociologist who


made significant contributions to the study of Indian society and culture.
Often he is consider as father of Indian sociology as he was the first
scholar who had build up the entire first generation of Indian sociologist in
post-independence Indian almost single handedly.

G. S. Ghurye was born on December 23, 1893, in Bombay (now


Mumbai), India. Ghurye had a distinguished academic career. He served
as a professor and head of the Department of Sociology at the University
of Bombay.

He was also associated with the Bombay School of Sociology, a


significant center for sociological studies in India.

His Famous works include "Caste and Race in India," published in


1932. In this book, Ghurye examined the complexities of the caste system
in India and its intersections with race. His other notable works include
"Indian Sadhus (1953)“ and "Social tension in India (1968)”.

He is theoretical pluralist because he studied Indian society through


multiple methods. Early adopted diffusionist approach of Anthropology
and later adopted ontological approach (relationship between concepts
and structure).

Sanskritic literature was the base of his understanding about the


Indian sociology.

Indologist of Bhandarkar institute influenced him much than others.


R.G.Bhandarkar was long regarded as founder of Indology in India.

M. N. Srinivas:

Mysore Narasimhachar Srinivas, commonly known as M. N. Srinivas,
was a distinguished Indian sociologist and social anthropologist. He
played a crucial role in shaping the study of Indian society and culture.He
concentrate various arts such as economics, politics, history, literature etc
but all these topics and disciplines came from his deep understanding
and base in sociology.

His famous work includes "Religion and Society Among the Coorgs of
South India" (1952) and “Social Structure of a Mysore village”.

He is well know for his concept Sanskritisation and Dominant caste.

His desire was to go beneath the surface of events to explore the


structural and historic forces that shared an event. He generally
communicate the results in simple terms and if he coined a new term, he
make sure it is aided with explanation.

He is not interested in understanding Indian society through western


books or sacred books rather interested in studying them directly, that is,
direct observation and field experience.

He is well know structural-functionalist in India sociology.

A.R.Desai:

Akshay Ramanlal Desai (26 April 1915 – 12 November 1994) was an


eminent Indian sociologist, Marxist scholar, and social activist.
He is widely recognised for his groundbreaking work, "Social
Background of Indian Nationalism (1946),” which provided a pioneering
Marxist analysis of the origins of Indian nationalism, employing historical
perspectives to establish a framework for building socialism in India.Later
he brought out another volume, Recent Trends in Indian
Nationalism(1960).

Desai's contributions to the field of sociology were profound and far-
reaching. He held a strong belief in the transformative power of education
and social activism, and his work consistently advocated for social justice
and equality. His unwavering commitment to Marxist ideology and his
incisive analysis of Indian society earned him a prominent position
among Indian sociologists.
