 The uses of pre-computer age computing devices
CONTENT OF CHARLES BABBAGE DIFFERENCE ENGINE
LESSON In 1822 English mathematician Charles Babbage proposed a steam
driven calculating machine that would be able to compute tables of
numbers such as logarithm tables.

CHARLES BABBAGE ANALYTICAL ENGINE

In 1833 Babbage designed a large general purpose programmable
machine that used punched card technology. Augusta Ada,
(a female English mathematician ) made notes on the engine
including what is recognised as the first algorithm. As a result, she is
often regarded as the first computer programmer.

HOLLERITH’S CENSUS MACHINE (HOLLERITH’S DESK)

This consisted of a card reader, a gear driven mechanism which
could count and a large wall of dial indicators to display the result
of the count. It was successfully used to complete the US 1890
census in only 3 years instead of saving years saving $5m.

BURROUGH’S MECHANICAL ADDING MACHINES

Invented by William Seward Burrough in 1885. They were a range
of machines that consisted of keypads, levers, registers and
printers. They were used for scientific, engineering and other
calculations requiring multiplication and division of long numbers.
PREVIOUS Students were introduced to the first set of COMPUTING DEVICES in
KNOWLEDGE the previous class.
PRESENTATION Teacher use questions to revise the first set of COMPUTING
DEVICES taught in previous class
STEP I Teacher displays pictures of Analytical Engine
STEP II Students describe features, components and uses of Analytical
Engine
STEP III Teacher displays pictures of Hollerith’s Desk
and Burrough’s machine
STEP IV Students describe features, components and uses of Hollerith’s
Desk and Burrough’s machine
STEP V Students list the names of inventors of early computing devices
EVALUATION 1. Describe the Analytical Engine
2. Describe Hollerith’s Census Machine
3. What was Hollerith’s Census Machine used for?
4.
Describe Burrough’s Mechanical Adding Machines
5.
What were Burrough’s mechanical adding machines used for?
6.
The invention of what devices led to the demise
of Burrough’s machines?
CONCLUSION Teacher reviews lesson main points
ASSIGNMENT Discuss the features of the following 20th century computing
devices:

INSTRUCTIONAL COMPUTER SYSTEM, PROJECTOR, Microsoft Word program,
MATERIALS Charts/Tables showing logic gate symbols and truth tables.
OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, students should be able to
 Define logic gates
 List types of logic gates
 Identify symbols of each logic gate
 Construct truth table for each logic gate
CONTENT OF WHAT IS LOGIC GATES?
LESSON A logic gate is an idealized or physical device implementing a
Boolean function; that is, it performs a logical operation on one or
more logical inputs, and produces a single logical output.

A logic gate is an electronic component that can be used to

conduct electricity based on a rule. The output of the gate is the
result of applying this rule to one or more "sources". These
sources may be two wires or the output of other logic gates

TYPES OF LOGIC GATES

LOGIC GATE REPRESENTATION
 Logic gate symbols
 Truth tables
 Logic equations
PREVIOUS Students were introduced to logic circuits in Basic 9
KNOWLEDGE
PRESENTATION Teacher uses questions to ascertain students’ recollection of logic
circuits
STEP I Students define logic circuits
STEP II Students state types of logic circuits
STEP III Students state methods of representing logic circuits
STEP IV Teacher guides students to draw logic gate symbols
STEP V Teacher guides students to draw logic gate truth tables
EVALUATION 1. Define a logic gate
2. List 3 simple logic gates
3. Draw the symbols for the listed logic gates
4. Draw the truth tables for the listed logic gates
CONCLUSION Teacher reviews lesson main points
ASSIGNMENT 1. Write logic equations for the 3 basic logic gates
2. State 3 uses of logic gates

OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, students should be able to
 Identify network cables
 List network connectors
 List types of computer cables
 List types of data cables
 List types of connectors
CONTENT OF NETWORK CABLES
LESSON Used to connect and transfer data between computers and a
network. Types: Twisted Pair, Coaxial, Optical Fibre, Telephone

CONNECTORS
This is the part of a cable that plugs into a port or interface to
connect one device to another. Types: Male and Female
Examples: RJ45, RJ11, T-connector
