What is an adverb?
An adverb is a word that is used to modify a verb
or adjective.

For example:

The dog ran quickly.

In this sentence, the word ‘ran’ is a verb (doing


word), ad ‘quickly’ is the adverb, as it explains how
the verb is being done.
So what might an adverbial phrase be?
An adverbial phrase is a selection of words that
add to the verb. They still explain how the verb
was done, but rather than being one word, there
can be lots!
For example:

He drove the bus as carefully as


possible.
