MEANING OF E-POS
Effect of Electronic Point of Sale (E-POS) is bid to bring in more transparency in the state’s
public distribution system. An EPOS system is basically a modern till system that features a
combination of hardware and software designed to help ration shops to run their business better .
The ration shops in Kerala have arranged E-pos machines for sale. The E-POS machines are
aimed at bringing transparency in public distribution system. As per the new scheme,
cardholders identified and the allotted quantity of supply will be distributed. Government of
Kerala implemented E-POS machine in ration shops to make the rationing high-tech. Under this
system ration goods will be distributed to beneficiaries after validation of biometric
identification. With this , the public distribution mechanism in the state will move into the
Aadhar enable PDS9(AePOS) .This PDS program leverages the Aadhar platform in delivering
the food commodities to the eligible subsidiaries.

DEFINITION
An E-POS device is a single fully integrated machine having sufficient memory to store
transaction data over a period . Aadhar enabled public distribution system is unique in improving
the quality under public distribution system. The E-POS is bid to bring in more transparency in
the state of public distribution system.

FACTORS
Effect of E-POS in the Public distribution system is influenced by social factor which includes
the class which consumer falls whether of high income group or low income group.
Technological factors such as the internal connection. It aslso requires customers to have a
Aadhar member correctly seede with the PDS database.
ADVANTAGES
 It has to stabilize the food available to consumers affordable prices .
 It keeps track of inventories that are import to satisfy the customer .
 It also speeds up the transaction , performance and makes it easy to complete sales
and payment process from customer.

DISADVANTAGES
 It could suffer from memory loss and slow reactions and may calculate billing
incorrectly.
 E-POS system should frequently be updated or else may create several electronic errors.
 It is difficult to remove unwanted item from the hill.
E-POS machines
POS machines are expected to bring in the transparency in the distribution of the food grain
quota and check the corruption that has been rampant in PDS. The ration cards can be
categorized on four as per the colour the yellow color card for most economically hbackward
section of the society. Pink card for priority or below poverty line (BPL) members Blue card for
non-priority subsidy or above poverty line beneficiaries (APL), white card for non-priority
beneficiaries. At present the biometric enabled E-POS system is introduced by the government to
ensure zero pilferages. The government of kerala implemented E-POS machine in ration shop to
make the rationing system high tech . Under this system , ration goods will be distributed to
beneficiaries after validation of biometric identification. This wil be a great provision for the
public distribution mechanism in the state to transit into the adhaar – enabled PDS(AcPDS)
mode. As a part of enforcing the national food security act (NFSA). The civil supplies

network of wholesale and retail outlets for the distribution of rationed articles is a remarkable
feature of the public distribution system.
E-POS FOR TRANSPARENCY IN RATIONING SYSTEM

The government has decided to install biometric electronic point of sale (E-POS) machines in
ration shops to ensure transparency in the public distribution system as enjoined in the national
food security act.

The pilot project will be launched in karunagapally taluk covering 60 rations shops. This will be
scaled up to cover all ration shops in three months, food and civil supplies minister P.
Thilothaman said.

He sai in a statement here on Friday that the biometric E-POS would prevent leakage at every
stage in the public distribution system , ensuring that the benefits accrued to the actual
beneficiaries and help monitor movement of ration articles and functioning of ration shops
through the web portal of the civil supplies Department.

The NFSA came into effect in Kerala from November 2016. After a protected process for the
identification of the priority sections , the final priority list was published for verification in
march 2017.After this process , the department had completed 98% of the printing and
distributed of ration cards to the beneficiaries.

He said the department had succeeded in identifying 2.47 lakh card holders as ineligible and
excluded them from the priority list. It had also added 2.47 lakh beneficiaries to the priority list
the minister said and added that the efforts to identify and include the real beneficiaries would
continue.

The minister said the government had already announced a remuneration package for ration shop
owners that would ensure a minimum income of rs16000. The package would come into force
along with establishment of E-POS machines. The government would be made available through
the ration shops to include rice flour , kera coconut oil and other products.
