MOS-2: Questions on Thick Shell

Q1. A thick walled closed-end cylinder is made of an Al-alloy (E = 72 GPa, 1/m = 0.33), das
inside diameter of 200 mm and outside diameter of 800 mm. The cylinder is subjected to internal
fluid pressure of 150 MPa. Determine the principal stresses and maximum shear stress at a point
on the inside surface of the cylinder. Also determine the increase in inside diameter due to fluid
pressure.
Q2. A compound cylinder formed by shrinking one tube to another is subjected to an internal
pressure of 90 MN/m2. Before the fluid id admitted, the internal and external diameters of the
compound cylinder are 180 mm and 300 mm respectively and the diameter at the junction is 240
mm. If after shrinking on, the radial pressure at the common surface is 12 MN/m2, determine the
final stresses developed in the compound cylinder.
Q3. A tube 80 mm inside and 120 mm outside diameter is to be reinforced by shrinkage on a
second tube of 160 mm outside diameter. The compound tube is to withstand an internal pressure
of 35 MPa and the shrinkage allowance is to be such that the final maximum stress in each tube
is to be same. Calculate this stress and show on a diagram the variation of hoop stress in the two
tubes. What is the initial difference of diameters before shrinkage on? E = 200 GPa.
Q4. A compound cylinder is made by shrinking an outer tube on to an inner tube, the final
dimensions being: external 300 mm, inner diameter 200 mm and diameter at junction 250 mm. If
the common radial pressure between the two tubes due to shrinking be 20 MPa, Show by means
of a diagram how radial and hoop stresses vary with the radius.
Q5. A steel cylinder of 1000 mm inside diameter is to be designed for an internal pressure of 4.8
MN/m2. Calculate:
(i) The thickness if the maximum shearing stress is not to exceed 21 MN/m2.
(ii) (ii) The increase in volume, due to working pressure, if the cylinder is 7 m long with
closed ends.
Neglect any constraints due to ends. Take: E = 200 GN/m2; Poisson’s ratio = 1/3.
Q6. Two thick cylinders A and B of the same size have external diameter twice as that of the
internal diameter. Cylinder A is subjected to internal pressure only, while cylinder B is subjected
to external pressure only. Calculate the ratio of these pressures when:
(a) The largest hoop stress in the two cases are equal in magnitude.
(b) The largest circumferential strains in the two cases are numerically equal. Take Poisson’s
ratio = 0.3. (MOS, kuk 2019)
