1. Introduction

In today's rapidly urbanizing world, there is a growing need for vibrant


and sustainable public spaces that can promote social interaction,
economic activity, and cultural exchange. Market cities, offer a unique
model for creating these dynamic and interconnected urban spaces.
such as bustling marketplaces, lively streetscapes, and diverse
communities, etc.

My thesis topic is SPR Market City, SPR Market city is a proposed


mixed-use development in Chennai, India, It is architecture responsible
to carefully planning and design in creating a successful city.

3. Design Methodology/ Approach

 Site Visit: Visit the proposed site to gather firsthand information


about the Accessibility, Topography, Climate and potential
challenges

 Data Collection: Collect relevant data from various sources,


including literature, government reports, and environmental
impact assessments

 Case Studies: Analyze existing examples of Market cities and


Township to identify successful design strategies and potential
pitfalls.

 Literature Review: Conduct a comprehensive review of relevant


literature on markets, Integrated township, Shopping malls, High
foot fall place such as plazas, urban squares and sustainable
architecture.

 Site Zoning: Divide the site into functional zones for research,
public engagement, administration, and utilities, ensuring efficient
use of space.

 Conceptual Design: Develop a conceptual design for the Market


city, considering factors such as site layout, Road access, micro
climate, and spatial Factors.

 Design Development: Develop the conceptual design into a


detailed architectural solution, Area statement ,incorporating
design principles for sustainability, functionality, and aesthetic
appeal.

4. Thrust area

 FORM FOLLOWS CLIMATE

 Do Chennai have warm and humid climate everywhere? Do


thousands of human presences in an area of space affect the
microclimate? How a plaza can be transformed into sustainable
and eco-friendly promoting element? How could an entire
township can achieve comforting microclimate? What are the
sustainable strategies while designing in a master plan level?

 Why most of the shopping mall uses Air conditioning? Does the air
conditioning have to be in the corridor too? Don’t we have any
technological or architectural development that help us to use air
conditioning and natural ventilation whenever is required? Do
shopping mall can achieve well-ventilated non air conditioning
Space?

 Why building material matters? Does vernacular material can only


achieve sustainability? Does Using glass as envelope of the
building increase the heat gain tremendously? How well a material
can comfort the user? what are the materials

 How much does the form of the building affect the climatic
strategies? Does computational design can generate climate

friendly form? What are the kinetic elements in architecture


promote green building?

 What are some passive energy and renewable energy strategies


can be incorporated? Does this site have enough space? Does this
site hold any scope for recycling?

5. Design Objective

A market city and township design that make use of different climates
Form of the design would be based on climatic factors
A barrier free zone where all public can access with distinct zoning to
segregate public and private spaces
Circulation plays a crucial role while planning a big public spaces such as
market city, office, school, residence
public space where people can relax enjoy their free time, calming eco-
friendly environment.

7.Design Constraints
Scale – The fact 120acre built area as single block make difficult to
place shops without compromising space and circulation friendly spaces and
had make good place making

Footfall – Managing crowd for 1,00,000 daily visitors need crowd


control strategies with proper distribution and segregation of zones
Plaza – Balancing the plaza as both market based and public based
design (semipublic and public)
Adaptability to future – It is a huge project. The aesthetics and the
design should keep up the future trends and also should not fail to maintain
the current trends
