Cold room Safety Rules

1. Access to the Cold room should be restricted to Authorised person.
2. ‘Unauthorised Entry Restricted’ sign boards to be displayed outside Cold room.
3. Person with health issues which may deteriorate in cold condition like Asthama,
pneumonia, Sinus, likewise are restricted to enter into cold room.
4. Person uses Cold protection Suit (3-layer protection suit, Hand gloves, shoes).
5. Lone working is restricted inside cold room i.e., standby person (Buddy) required
while person working inside.
6. Personnel should be trained to recognise symptoms cold stress i.e., Cold hands and
feet indicate a drop in body temperature, extreme drowsiness, loss of balance,
extreme shivering or slower than normal breathing, as these are early signs of
hypothermia.
7. If you suffer with any of the above symptoms kindly exist the cold room.
8. Person should have regular warm-up breaks in case of prolong working in cold
room.
9. Stacking/ Storage of Material should be done as per the compatibility and their list
to be displayed outside the cold room.
10. Good housekeeping should be maintained inside cold room to eliminate slip & trip
hazard.
11. All Electrical installations should be FLP.
12. All door latches and push knobs, all Electrical installations & cables to be inspected
periodically as per the Preventive maintenance schedule.
13. Emergency Alarms and Emergency lighting to be inspected regularly.
14. Visitors/ Contractors/ Vendors entering cold room must wear above mentioned PPE
and accompanied by an authorised person all the time and in accordance to a
permit-to-work system.
15. In case of cold storage room door locked, personnel inside should use the push
button/ Pull lever for the escaping the cold storage.
16. Person should inspect thoroughly inside the cold room before it is locked.
17. Ensure Emergency lighting & hotter power is backed up with UPS.
18. Display Emergency exit procedure inside cold
19. Ensure the availability of Emergency alarm push button inside cold room.
20. In case of any violation to the above rules, Graded violation and Consequence
management shall be imposed.
Emergency procedure:

 In case a person got trapped in cold room-

1. Try to open the door by using unlock latch/ push knob/ Wheel.
2. Emergency alarm should be used if the person is unable to unlock the door.
3. In case of emergency Refrigerator power should be cut off (Emergency alarm to be
interlocked to refrigerator power)
4. Immediately move the trapped person to a warmer area and wrap him with warm
clothing.
