15. Biodiversity

• ENDANGERED SPECIES Birds/plants/species animals or plants which may soon not exist

because there are very few now alive.

• BIODIVERSITY Variety of plant and animal species that exist in a particular environmental area.

• CARBON MONOXIDE The poisonous gas formed by the burning of carbon, especially in the

form of car fuel.

• DEFORESTATION The cutting down of trees in a large area; the destruction of forests.

• GREENHOUSE EFFECT Air, water, and land in or on which people, animals and plants live.

• OIL SLICK Increase in world temperatures caused by polluting gases.

• POLLUTION A layer of oil that is floating over a large area of the surface of the sea.

• DROUGHT Damage caused to water, air... by harmful substances or waste.

• FUMES The gas formed when carbon is burned, or when people or animals breathe out.

• CARBON DIOXIDE A long period when there is little or no rain.

• FLOOD A large amount of water covering an area that is usually dry.

• GLOBAL WARMING An increase in the amount of carbon dioxide and other gases in the

atmosphere.

• ENVIRONMENT Strong, unpleasant, and sometimes dangerous gas or smoke.

4

• GLOBAL WARMING Things such as minerals, forests, coal, etc. which exist in a place and can

be used by people.

• WASTE Unwanted matter or material of any type, often that which is left after useful substances

or parts have been removed.

STEP 3: LISTENING PRACTICE NOW, LISTEN TO THE AUDIO ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

BY CLICKING HERE: ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES. THEN, ACCORDING TO WHAT YOU LISTENED

TO, COMPLETE THE ITEMS WITH THE WORDS IN THE BOX. WHEN YOU SOLVE IT, SHARE IT

ON THE FORUM

ITEM A: There is a global water crisis WATER SCARCITY and drought have left to 844 million

people lacking access to clean water.

ITEM B: Oil accidents at sea can cause OIL SPILLS which contaminate the ocean water, resulting

in the death of sea birds and other forms of marine life.

ITEM C: Growing trees, plants and your own vegetables help contribute to a. SUSTAINABLE

ENVIRONMENT

ITEM D: FRACKING or drilling on the ground for oil and gas, often contaminates the water

supplies.

ITEM E: Increase FLOODING is a consequence of deforestation which is the cutting down of too

many trees.

ITEM F: One of the most common forms of renewable energy is WIND POWER which electricity

generated by wind turbines.

ITEM G: Air pollution and POOR AIR QUALITY is a problem in many cities around the world.

ITEM H: EXTREME WEATHER temperatures. includes tornados, cyclones and extremely high or

low

ITEM I: Cars and planes burn fuel, when you travel by plane or car, you contribute to the burning of

fuel; this is your CARBON FOOTPRINT

ITEM J: Polar bears living in the artic are impacted by the MELTING ICE CAP

ITEM K: FOREST FIRES seem to be hotter and worst every summer

STEP 4: SPOKEN INTERACTION IN THIS STEP, YOU MUST ATTEND AND PARTICIPATE IN

ONE OF THE FIVE SYNCHRONOUS MEETING (STT= STUDENTS’ TALKING TIME) FOR
6

INTERACTING WITH YOUR TUTOR AND E-MATES, WHERE YOU WILL COMMENT AND

EXPLAIN THE ISSUES DEVELOPED IN THE STEPS 2 AND 3.

Some of the questions that may appear on the game are:

A. TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF. (PERSONAL INFORMATION)

I am a sixth semester telecommunications student working in the Telecommunications sector

with 6 years of experience. I like to travel, play games and ride a bicycle. My favorite food is

hamburgers and my favorite team is Millionaires.

B. WHAT DO YOU DO TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT?

To help the environment, I mainly get around by bicycle and I also recycle plastic bottles.

C. WHAT IS R-R-R?

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

D. HOW CAN YOU LOWER YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT?

do not use vehicles that contribute to the burning of fuel

E. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CARBON MONOXIDE AND CARBON DIOXIDE?

Unlike carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide does not occur naturally in the atmosphere. It is created

through the incomplete combustion of coal, natural gas, and oil. Low oxygen levels and

temperature drops generate carbon monoxide in the combustion mixture.

F. WHAT IS THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT?

The greenhouse effect is the way heat is trapped near the Earth's surface by "greenhouse

gases." You can think of these heat-trapping gases as a blanket that wraps around Earth,

keeping the planet warmer than it would be without it.

7

G. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?

I like to ride a bike, go out to the park with my pets, I like to go to the stadium and spend the

weekends with my family

H. WHY FRACKING IS SO DANGEROUS?

Methane is the gas that is extracted through Fracking, 85 times more polluting than carbon

dioxide as a greenhouse gas and it has been estimated that between 4% and 8% of the gas

produced escapes into the atmosphere during extraction.

Beyond these risks, various studies warn that fracking could cause methane leaks —a

greenhouse gas— and increased seismic activity in extraction areas. It would also affect forests

on a large scale, due to the amount of area that must be cleared for its implementation.

I. WHAT IS THE GLOBAL WARMING?

Global warming results from the increase in the greenhouse effect, a process in which the

thermal radiation emitted by the Earth is trapped in the atmosphere due to greenhouse gases

(GHG). Its presence is natural and necessary to maintain the planet's temperature at habitable

values. The problem is that emissions of gases such as methane or nitrous oxide have

skyrocketed compared to the pre-industrial era.

J. IN YOUR OPINION, WHY IS WATER SHORTAGE HAPPENING IN SOME PARTS OF

COLOMBIA? HOW COULD IT BE SOLVED?

The accelerated urbanization, the increase in agricultural activities, the use of fertilizers and

pesticides, the degradation of the soil, the high concentrations of population and the deficient

disposal of waste from the availability of fresh water resources.

STEP 6: SELF-EVALUATION IN THIS STEP, YOU MUST CHECK YOUR PERFORMANCE DURING

THE TIME THIS TASK IS DEVELOPED. FOR THAT, YOU HAVE TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING

QUESTIONS IN A SCALE FROM 0 TO 2. YOU CAN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS WITHIN THE

CHART IS GIVEN. THIS STEP MUST APPEAR IN THE CONSOLIDATION STEP. THESE ARE THE

QUESTIONS:

1. Did I follow accurately the steps according to what the worksheet requires?

2. Did I attend and participate in the stt (synchronous meeting) that the task required?

3. Did I take into account tutor’s recommendations on the forum?

4. Did I record the video according to all the indications in the worksheet?

5. Did I consolidate all the steps in the final document to be posted on the evaluation environment?
