PRE-BOARD EXAM
Class 10 - Science
Time Allowed: 3 hours Maximum Marks: 30

Section A
1. Which one of the following is involved in reflex action? [1]

a) Endocrine gland b) Exocrine glad

c) spinal cord d) Brain

2. Electrical impulse travels in a neuron from - [1]

a) Cell body → dendrite → axon → axonal b) Dendrite → cell body → axon → axonal
end. end

c) Axonal end → axon → cell body → d) Dendrite → axon → axonal end → cell
dendrite body.
3. A bisexual flower contains: [1]

a) Stamens only b) Both stamens and carpels

c) Carpels only d) Either stamens or carpels

4. The given graph shows the hormonal changes during a normal menstrual cycle. What would be a likely [1]
consequence if the hormone represented by Q in the given graph is lacking in an adult female?

a) Levels of the hormone represented by graph b) Fertilisation of ovum would fail to occur.
P would be higher than normal.

c) There would be no significant effect since d) The uterine lining might not be sufficiently
the functions of the hormones overlap. stable for implantation of fertilised ovum.
5. Assertion (A): Vasectomy is a surgical method of birth control. [1]
Reason (R): In a vasectomy, a small portion of the oviduct is cut or tied properly.

a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct b) Both A and R are true but R is not the
explanation of A. correct explanation of A.

c) A is true but R is false. d) A is false but R is true.

6. In a plant, smooth seeds(S) are dominant over wrinkled seeds(s) and green seeds (G) are dominant over yellow [1]
seeds (g). A plant homozygous for smooth and green seed is crossed with a plant having wrinkled and yellow
seeds. The F1 offspring are self crossed to produce F2 generation. If a total of 160 offspring are produced, how

many plants are expected to be having wrinkled and green seeds in F2 generation, according to a typical

Mendelian cross?

a) 10 b) 90

c) 30 d) 20
7. Haemophilia is more commonly seen in human males than in human females because: [1]

a) This disease is due to an X-linked recessive b) A greater proportion of girls die in infancy
mutation

c) This disease is due to an X-linked dominant d) This disease is due to a Y-linked recessive
mutation
Section B
8. Sameer was studying in his room. Suddenly he smells something burning and sees smoke in the room. He rushes [2]
out of the room immediately. Was Sameer's action voluntary or involuntary? Why?
9. In the following crosses write the characteristics of the progeny: [2]

Round yellow seeds will be produced.

Section C
10. Name the parts A, B and C shown in the following diagram and state one function of each. [3]

11. A red-eyed individual is crossed with a white-eyed individual to produce F1 progeny with red eyes. When F1 [3]
individuals are intercrossed, F2 progeny is formed with both red as well as white-eyed individuals.

a. How is the dominant trait identified?

b. What are recessive traits?
c. If 12 individuals are produced in F2 generation, then how many white-eyed individuals would be obtained?
Calculate the ratio of red-eyed individuals to white-eyed individuals.
Section D
12. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [4]
The teacher while conducting practicals in the laboratory divided the students into three groups and gave them
various solutions to find out their pH and classify them into acidic, basic and neutral solutions.
Group A - Lemon juice, vinegar, colourless aerated drink
Group B - Tomato juice, coffee, ginger juice
Group C - Sodium hydroxide, sodium chloride, lime water

(i) For the solutions provided, which group is/are likely to have pH value (i) less than 7, and (ii) greater than
7?
(ii) List two ways of determining pH of a solution.
(iii) Explain, why the sour substances such as lemon juice are effective in cleaning the tarnished copper
vessels.
(iv) pH has great importance in our daily life. Justify this statement by giving two examples.
13. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [4]
The modes by which various organisms reproduce depend on the body design of the organisms. In asexual
reproduction, a single individual parent produces offsprings without the involvement of gametes. This method is
a common means of increasing the off-springs rapidly under favourable conditions. Asexual reproduction occurs
mostly in unicellular organisms, some plants and certain simple multicellular animals.
(i) Why is regeneration not same as reproduction?
(ii) List any two advantages of producing plants through vegetative propagation.
(iii) Explain the process of budding in Hydra.
(iv) What happens when
I. a spirogyra filament matures and attains a considerable length, and
II. a sporangia in Rhizopus bursts on maturation?
Section E
14. The image shows phototropism in the plant stem. [5]

Using the given image, answer the following questions:

i. Which plant hormone is responsible for the bending of the stem towards the light?
ii. Where is this hormone present in the plant?
iii. What makes the stem bend towards the light?
iv. Why such movement of plant stem is called positive tropism?
v. Which part of the plant shows negative phototropism?
