World Military Spending at All-Time High

A report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), confirmed

a record high in global military spending in 2022, totaling $2.24 trillion. The main
driving factor was the Russia-Ukraine war, which prompted countries to allocate
more funds towards their security and defense.
2022 was the eighth year in a row for global military spending to rise, with spending
up 3.7% from 2021. Spending in Europe alone rose 13% to $480 billion, the highest
annual increase since the end of the Cold War.
Ukraine experienced a massive increase in military spending, reaching $44 billion,
which marked the largest annual increase ever recorded by SIPRI. This surge
amounted to a remarkable 640% rise. In contrast, Russia's military spending grew
by an estimated 9.2% to approximately $86 billion, although the accuracy of this
figure was uncertain, according to researchers.
Several neighboring countries of Russia, including Finland, saw significant increases
in their military spending. Finland raised its military expenditure by 36%. It is worth
noting that Finland joined NATO in April 2023.
The US held the position of the world's largest military spender in 2022, allocating a
substantial $877 billion towards its military. Also, the US is the largest contributor
of military aid to Ukraine. The next four biggest military spenders were China,
Russia, India, and Saudi Arabia.
A researcher at SIPRI said, the continuing rise in global military spending shows
"that we are living in an increasingly insecure world."

disarmament and peace-building?
9. Should there be greater international cooperation and diplomatic efforts to
address conflicts and reduce the need for extensive military expenditures?
10. How might record military spending impact social and domestic priorities within
countries, such as income inequality and social welfare programs?
