►►► Gerunds and Infinitives / The Infinitives of Purpose
What are gerunds and infinitives? A gerund is an -ing form of a verb (such as going), while an
infinitive is formed by adding to before a verb (such as to go).
A number of verbs are followed by gerunds. The most common verbs in this category include enjoy,
resent, appreciate, avoid, mind, dislike, recommend, suggest, consider, tolerate and finish.
Some other verbs are followed by infinitives. The most common verbs in this category include try,
want, learn, decide, would like, would love, would hate, would prefer, agree, expect, hope, ask,
deserve, need, plan, promise, offer and refuse.
There are also a number of verbs that can be followed by both gerunds and infinitives without any
changes in their meanings, verbs such as like, love, hate, start, begin, continue and prefer.

by gerunds and infinitives.
