The Monument Project

Your Role: You are a consultant hired by the Monroe administration to help decide on
and design a beautification project to be exhibited in the rebuilt Washington DC.

The Situation: You have been asked to organize the creation of a new monument for the rebuilt
city of Washington after the destruction caused by the War of 1812. President Monroe has asked
you to design a new monument to commemorate the work of an individual, group, or event from
early American history. You have been asked to begin by evaluating key events or facilitators of
change in America during pre-colonial times through the early years of American history up to
and including the War of 1812.

Your Audience: Your target audience will be visitors to the newly rebuilt capital city.

Directions: You will conduct research on a topic of your choosing and develop a slideshow
presentation. Also upon completion of your slideshow you should prepare yourself to deliver a
two-four minute speech that explains how your chosen individual, organization or event from
early in American history influenced the trajectory of the young United States and justify why a
monument commemorating you topic deserves to be placed in the nation's capital.
