V. READING COMPREHENSION
My grandma and I share a pastime: knitting. She taught me how to knit when I was ten
years old. In the evening, we both sit in front of the TV and knit. Now I can knit
scarves, hats, and even sweaters. I remember last year I had to find a birthday present
for my dad. Then I thought of knitting a sweater for him. I searched the Internet for a
day, and finally I found the pattern that came with a YouTube video showing me how

I just want to talk about how my friends and I spend our free time. My best friends
are Tom and David. They are in the same class as me. Teenagers often complain
they're bored and have nothing to do. I can't understand them. I'm never bored.
If the weather is nice, we go for a walk or we ride our bikes. All of us love
rollerblading. We often play football, basketball or cricket in the park and when it is
rainy, we go to the sports centre. Here we usually play table tennis or go swimming.
If you play a musical instrument it's a good fun! I play the guitar and practise a lot.
At home I usually listen to music or read magazines and books. Of course, as other
teenagers I often go on the Internet or play computer games - but not always! It's a

In the evenings I sometimes watch TV. I often invite my friends over for dinner or

V. READING COMPREHENSION
Folk games are traditional games that people of all ages appear to enjoy playing.
They can take many forms and differ from culture. Tug of war is one of the most
popular folk games. Two team pull on a rope in opposite directions until one of them
crosses the centerline. Hopscotch is another popular game in which players jump on
one foot while throwing a small object into a numbered pattern on the ground. Sack
races, in which participants race while jumping inside a sack, and blind man’s bluff,
in which one player gets blindfolded and then tries to catch the other players, are two
other folk games. There’s also the game of marbles, in which payers shoot marbles
into a circle in the hopes of knocking out the marbles of their opponents. Folk games
are a great way to learn about our culture. These games also assist people in making
new friends and working as a team. They can teach important values and encourage
physical fitness. Participating an a folk game can be a fun and memorable way to
bring people together.

Our oceans are becoming extremely polluted. Most of this pollution comes
from the land which means comes from people. First there is raw sewage, which is
pumped directly into the sea. Many countries both developed and developing are
guilty of doing this. Secondly, ships drop about 6 million ton of garbage into the sea
each year. Thirdly, there are oil spills from ships. A ship has an accident and oil leaks
from the vessel. This not only pollutes the water but it also kills the marine life. Next,
there are waste materials from factories. Without proper regulations, factory owners let
the waste run directly into the rivers, which then leads to the sea. And finally, oil is
washed from land. This can be the result of carelessness or a deliberate dumpling of
waste.

The Problem of Garbage
Every one of us produces garbage of one kind or another. Some of the garbage is
thrown into the sea. Some is burnt or buried under the ground. Every year we need to
find about 800,000 cubic meters of empty land just to bury the garbage. This is the
same as filling one football stadium with garbage up to 20 meters high!
This garbage damages the environment. Although a lot of garbage is buried in the
ground, some of it gets blown about in the wind. Also, when garbage is burnt,
poisonous gases are given off into the air. The garbage thrown into the sea will pollute
the water.
What can we do about these problems? Well, one very easy answer is to produce less
garbage. We can recycle things made from glass and paper as well as tin cans. People
can refuse to take the plastic bags from the shops and supermarkets by bringing with
them their own bags or baskets when they go shopping.
The government should tell people about the dangers of the pollution caused by
garbage. Education is perhaps the most important factor for keeping our environment
healthy for the future.

V. READING COMPREHENSION
Krakatoa (Indonesian name: Krakatau) is a volcano near the Indonesian island
of Rakata in the Sunda Strait. It has erupted repeatedly in known history. The best
known of these events occurred in late August 1883.
The 1883 eruption ejected more than six cubic miles (25 cubic kilometers) of rock,
ash, and pumice, and made the loudest sound ever recorded by human beings – the
sound was heard as far away as Perth in Australia (very far), and the island of
Rodrigues near Mauritius (very far). Many thousands of people were killed and injured
by the eruption, mostly in the tsunami (giant wave) which followed the explosion.
