Six Leadership Styles
Biases
BIAS & HEURISTIC
From an evolutionary point of view, they have developed because speed was often
more important than accuracy.
Heuristics are the "shortcuts" that humans use to reduce task complexity in
judgment and choice.
Biases are the resulting gaps between normative behavior and the heuristically
determined behavior

Biases
Conscious or Unconscious Bias
Courageous Self-Reflection
Implicit Bias
Refers to the judgment, attitudes, or
stereotypes towards others that impact what
we Say, Think, & Do in an UNCONSCIOUS
manner. Based on the shortcut our brain
made.

We all have the power to be leaders. While we don't all have the
position power to be the boss, we still can cultivate the personal
ability to influence and impact our worlds. We lead in our homes, in
the workspace, with our friends, and in our organizations. So, this is
for you wherever you find yourself in a leadership role. There are
some significant correlations between a person's self-awareness and
performance. In a study by Hay Group (now Korn Ferry), they
explored how self-awareness makes better leaders, especially in the
areas of emotional intelligence, social awareness, reducing
defensiveness, and the power of celebrating those around you. Self-
awareness is fundamental to effective leadership. It's a process of
knowing yourself, leading yourself, and leading others.
Courageous Curiosity
• What is my goal?
• Where did I get hooked?
• How does my reaction influence the situation?
• What is mine to own?
• How do I want to navigate conflict?

Emotional Intelligence
Many years ago, a student came to a wise teacher, saying, "I want to
be a great leader. Will you teach me?" The wise teacher nodded and
walked away. The student followed. After walking through a forest,
they came to a stream. The teacher sat down, and so did the student.
They sat for hours, listening to the sound of the water flowing over
rocks, noticing the fish that leaped for mayflies, watching the
swirling eddies as water flowed steadily on. The day was spent in
silent contemplation.
The next day, the teacher and the student found a clearing in the
forest. The teacher began to gather wood. The student joined, and
together they gathered wood to build a fire. The flames tentatively
licked the kindling while the fire grew. Heat and energy swirled.
Several unsuspecting insects were lost to the flames. The day was
spent quietly feeding and caring for the fire long into the night.
In the morning, the teacher asked the student, "What have the fire
and the stream taught you of leadership?" The student sat quietly,
pondering, then stated, "I apologize wise teacher. I am not sure I
understand the lesson."

The teacher then spoke again: "Reflect on the nature of the fire that
burned before us yesterday. It was a wild, powerful thing. Strong and
energetic. As the flames danced, nothing in the forest, no trees, or
wild animals, could match its raw power. With freedom, it could have
overwhelmed all that came before it. Yet, it needed to be constantly
fed."
"In the end, what remains of the indomitable fire? Only ashes. The
fire is strong. It can overwhelm all that is in its path. Eventually, the
fire consumes all, and nothing remains, not even itself. Not so with
the water. It begins as a small stream, slowly and humbly growing
deeper and more powerful as it journeys to the sea. Along the way, it
carves mountains and sustains life."
The two sat quietly for a time. Then the teacher spoke, "So it is with
the nature of leaders. Each must choose a path. Is it the water or the
fire that they emulate? Recognize the difference in each: fire and
stream. Which has sustainable power? It is not those leaders who
must be fed constantly to sustain energy who rule others with power
and authority. Rather it is the leader who draws upon the well of life,
who is humble and powerful, who captures the hearts and minds of
people." After a few moments, the teacher said, "What type of leader
will you choose to be?"
