A higher level.

That’s what you get with Ford gas engines

and transmissions.
A higher build level means you’re getting engine and transmission assemblies built to the exacting specifications of
Ford Motor Company. So you not only get the quality build you expect in an assembly from Ford, but also one that’s built
by using parts that keep it specific to year, make and model as well as emissions calibrations.

3-Year/Unlimited-Mile Warranty – No Commercial Exceptions

Ford gasoline engines and transmissions are covered by a three-year/unlimited-mile warranty.* All warranties are backed
by Ford Motor Company. They’re also supported by more than 3,000 Ford and Lincoln Dealerships nationwide as well as
at their originating place of service.

Plus, unlike some competitors, this warranty is good for fleet vehicles. That means you get the same advantages
and coverage for commercial use, no exceptions.

For technical questions, contact the Ford Powertrain Assistance Center at 1-800-392-7946 or visit FordParts.com.

ho knew back in 1989 when 1
the E4OD was launched E4OD/4R100/5R110W
what the time-frame foot-
print would be or how many changes
would occur, let alone that it would
grow into a five-speed automatic?
For the repair industry, the big
RWD family of transmissions has
been pretty profitable due to failures,
but at times somewhat troublesome
due to rebuilding issues and compo-
nent upgrades. Some upgrades have
been fairly straightforward and inex-
pensive while others were more com-
plex and costly. The four-speeds
certainly had modifications and up- O.D. sun gear

in comparison to the five-speeds.
Although basic architecture is the
same between four- and five-speed
units, component interchangeability is 2 E4OD 5R110W 5R110W
limited between the models. One small E4OD 4R100 03-06 07-up
item did migrate over to the five-speed
transmission, although with a couple
of tweaks beyond the E4OD.
The E4OD, 4R100 and 5R110W OD
(overdrive) sun gear has always been
attached to the coast clutch drum, ei-
ther by a spline slip-fit or press-fit de-
sign (Figure 1).
The first design OD sun gear that
went into the 1989 E4OD had teeth
that were the same diameter and style
from one end of the gear to the other.
The gear included a rounded backup snap ring for 3 E4OD
positioning in the coast drum as well as a bore bush- 4R100 5R110W
ing for support on the input shaft. The gear was a
slip-fit into the drum. The coast drum was cast iron.
By 1998, Ford decided to give the E4OD a facelift
by releasing the 4R100. Although some changes did
occur to the E4OD, the 4R100 consisted of several
upgrades that would not interchange with the earli-
er models. One change was to the coast clutch drum,
which was no longer cast iron, but steel (GROB). In
addition to the material change was the OD sun-gear

was the sun-gear tooth design. The area of the teeth OWC splines
that mesh with the drum were more blunt than on
the E4OD sun gear, creating a step in the gear. The
new design was a press-fit as well.
Ford designed the new sun to work with both
cast and steel drums. The E4OD sun gear (part
#E9TZ-7D063B) became NLA and was superseded
by the 4R100 gear (part #F81Z-7D063AA). When
using the new gear in a steel drum, merely press it
in. When using the gear in a cast drum however, a
square-cut snap ring must also be used for back-up.
Including 5R110W models, there are now four
types of OD sun gears (Figure 2). The cast drum
E4OD coast drum
sun-gear is on the left with uniform teeth and a
rounded snap-ring. Next to that gear is the combo
cast/steel drum design with blunt teeth and
square-cut snap ring to use with a cast drum type.
5 OWC inner race
The two gears on the right are the 03-06 and 07-up
5R110W sun gears.
Due to pump and coast drum design changes,
the 03-06 5R110W sun gear is slightly different from
the 4R100 gear. The coast drum bushing position is
different on 5R110W models than E4OD/4R100 and
the sun gear no longer uses a bushing. The bore of
the gear was reduced accordingly (Figure 3). The
early 5R110W gear (part #3C3Z-7D063AA) is also
NLA due to design changes in 2007. An entire up-
date package now is available to retro to 2003. If a
gear is needed for 03-06, the 4R100 gear can be used
by removing the bushing.
The 2007 upgrade involves the entire overdrive 4R100 coast drum
planet set and coast clutch assembly, including the
sun-gear tooth count. Previous sun gears had 38
teeth whereas 2007-up gears have 41. In addition, 6 Diode design
there is a slight diameter difference between the
types (approximately .025). Ensure that you choose
the correct gear before pressing into the drum or
damage will occur. The 41-tooth gear part number
is 7C3Z-7D063C.
All coast clutch drums contained the overdrive
OWC (One Way Clutch) rather than a sprag, roller
clutch or diode. The E4OD cast drum had inner race
splines for the entire OWC assembly (Figure 4). The
sun gear fit cannot be too tight or the cast drum
could crack.
In addition to the 4R100 drum being steel, the
OWC design was also changed so that the inner
race is now part of the drum (Figure 5). The modifi- 5R110W coast drum
cation also meant that the sun gear can have a high-
er press fit.

to the synchronizer and speed gear components in the
transmission.
Diagnosis routines start with the removal of the
trans and a thorough inspection of the bellhousing,
quill tube, front seals and pilot-bearing journal on the
input shaft. Check the input splines for wear, rust and
straightness. If the clutch disc cannot move freely
back and forth, you will never achieve a proper clutch
release. Check the release bearing for wear and hy-
draulic issues and inspect the inside of the bellhous-
ing for worn clutch material, oil leaks and any signs of
abuse, such as water contamination or sand and mud.
Remove the clutch assembly and the flywheel.
Carefully inspect the clutch disc for wear, oil con-
tamination, broken or moved damper springs in the
clutch hub, overheated material and red dust. Red
dust is a sign of misalignment between the bellhous-
ing and the block, which puts excessive runout in the
disc. Make sure that the block-to-trans alignment
dowels are in place and not worn or damaged.

replaced it. This corrected all code
issues and he was able to complete
the TCM programming process.
The wiring harness that the CAN
wires are housed in run very close
to (if not right on top of) coil #4 at
the back of the engine (Figures 2
and 3). TD

Since the writing of this article, our warranty techs

have come across this problem on several occa-
sions. In all of these cases the coils were swapped
and the communications codes went away. Oddly
enough, the codes that were set in each of these
situations stayed very consistent, with U0101 and
3 U1900, although the U1900 code was not consis-
tent as to which module it was stored in.
Therefore, the next time you encounter CAN com-
munication codes, don’t overlook the NOT so
obvious. And don’t be afraid to use mode 6 data
during your diagnostic approach. It’s a great tool
for situations like this.

Plan of Action
Fast, Easy and Low-Cost Leads
The first part of my plan is to make it easy to get
low-cost Internet leads. The good news is that there
are plenty of low-cost leads! You just have to be set
up to pay for and receive them.
Free Training
The next part of the plan is training. I would like
to thank those of you who signed up for the produc-
tion management training in February at the
Transteam website. It has been a dream of mine for
a long time. The online class was a great success. All
students finished the training and passed their certi-
fication test. There were no quitters. They were all
climbers and they each received a Production
Management Certificate to hang on their wall at the
shop. Congratulations to the first class of 2015. No
more Hotel Hell!
I have been inspired by your response to the first
round of online classes, so I am putting together a
training and certification class for telephone proce-
dure now. I am collaborating with the number-one
lead expert in the industry, Corey Turner at
DriveTrain Technology, now to create a great online
learning experience. We should be finished by the
time you read this. Come to the Transteam website
and sign up for the training. It is free again this
month to Transmission Digest readers. Just go to
http://web.transteam.com/training/ and enter the
code TDtrain4free when you register for online
training.
Formula to Maximize Leads
Easy-to-get cost-effective Internet leads + free on-
line telephone training = More $$$.
As industry salesmen, let’s all work together as a
team to maximize the leads at our shops by taking
the time to get some formal online training and
learn the proper telephone procedure, because
Together Everyone Achieves More as a team. Online
lead programs will make the phone ring and online
training will give us an easy way to improve our
telephone skills and techniques. The training should
give us the tools and techniques we need to show
the lead experts what we are made of and, while we
are at it, put a little extra cash in our own pockets.
Now that we have the right formula. Do take action.
