Labour Force

LFPR continued its upward trend to 69.3 per cent in 2022

Labour force in Malaysia in 2022 strengthened further by 1.4 per cent (+224.9 thousand persons)
reaching a total of 16.02 million persons as compared to 15.80 million persons in 2021.
Meanwhile, the labour force participation rate (LFPR) remained on an increasing trend, escalated
by 0.7 percentage points to 69.3 per cent (2021: 68.6%) [Exhibit 1].

During the year, both male and female labour force recorded an upward trend. The male labour
force rose by 1.6 per cent (+150.7 thousand persons) to 9.78 million persons compared to
9.63 million persons in 2021, while the female labour force also posted an increase from
6.17 million persons to 6.24 million persons in 2022. Year-on-year growth for female labour force
increased by 1.2 per cent (+74.2 thousand persons). In the meantime, LFPR for male improved
by 1.0 percentage points to 81.9 per cent (2021: 80.9%), while LFPR for female also improved
by 0.3 percentage points to 55.8 per cent (2021: 55.5%).

By age group, aged 25 to 34 years posted the highest LFPR with 86.1 per cent and the lowest
LFPR recorded in the age group of 15 to 24 years with 46.1 per cent. Age group of 35 to 44 years
also registered an increase of 0.6 percentage points to 84.3 per cent followed by age group of
45 to 54 with 75.7 per cent. As for gender, the highest LFPR for male labour force was in the age
group of 35 to 44 years with 98.3 per cent. Meanwhile, female LFPR for age group of
25 to 34 years remain the highest, increased by 4.0 percentage points to 76.8 per cent [Chart 1].
