Question 1:
Explain the history behind the division of Germany into East and West, and the reasons behind
East Germans attempting to escape from East to West.

During World War Two, Germany was a totalitarian state under the Nazi control. As the axis
powers lost, Germany was left for the allies: The United States, The Soviet Union, France, and
Britain. Germany is now separated into four parts. One of the most significant occurrences
was the Cold War, the tension grew between opposing ideologies of the Soviet Union and
United States. With this happening, the Eastern and Western sides of Germany grew apart,
with the East being a communist state under the control of the Soviet Union, and the west
side having the three allies unite under a capitalist system. It can be said that The Cold War is
the cause behind all this separation, eventually leading to the Iron curtain, an ideological
barrier between the West and East, clarifying the different controlling Systems. Moreover,
the Berlin wall was created, a separatory wall of concrete, wiring and watchtowers to
separate the Eastern and Western parts of Berlin under the rule of the two different
governments. With the following events, it is noticeable that each system follows certain
ideologies and ruling systems, where the Western side flourished with free-trade,
investment, and political and civil rights. On the other hand, the Eastern Communist side of
Germany has opposite living conditions, very harsh, weak, and controlling system that lacked
free-trade, rights, and basic standards of living. Later leading Eastern Germans to attempt to
flee their side in search of a better life with better economy.
Question 2:
Examine the concept alluded to in the photo attached below.

A scene from the Vietnam war, a proxy warfare occurring between communist North Vietnam
with the help of USSR and South Vietnam with the support of the United States. The specific
picture possibly depicts Guerilla warfare, the form of military tactics used by the North
Vietnamese civilians to destroy the Americans in South Vietnam mainly led by Hu Chi Minh
(North Vietnamese president). Guerilla warfare is a very unconventional form of war for the
traditionally trained American military, including hiding in ambushes, and using the forests and
the Vietnamese nature and forests for their benefit with hiding and suddenly attacking. The
significance of the Vietnam war in the Cold War is undebatable, however the Guerilla warfare
can be viewed as a major drawback for the weakened Americans, where many Presidents found
useless and impact less solutions to minimize the dangers and problems occurring with Guerilla
warfare. At the end of the Vietnam war, the United States lost, and Guerilla warfare is one of
the most evident reasons for that loss due to it weakening the military and causing many death
cases.

Question 3:
Analyze what the following graph is referencing. Define and discuss the event that it relates to.

The following graph explains the occurrence of the Cold War. After World War Two, the
growing ideological tensions between the two major world powers: The United States and The
Soviet Union started to show. In the graph the most important years of the Cold War are
evident, late 1940’s to the end of war (1991) and some years after. The naming of the Cold War
is because of the actual armed conflicts not happening. The reasoning of why the Cold War
stayed “Cold”, is both sides owning nuclear weapons as observed in the above graph.
Noticeably, the United States have had nuclear weapons prior to USSR. As the USSR suspect the
US’ unfriendliness, they begin owning nuclear weapons, clear in the years where most tension
is present. With the two sides having nuclear power, they understand that using such weapons
would end both sides, where the nuclear warheads increase every year until the drop after the
Soviet Union rule ends in the 1990’s. The Cold War took a different path due to nuclear weapon
threats, becoming more focused on Proxy Warfare, and the conflicts ins different fields such as
science, space, sports, and many more.

Question 4:
Explain the reasons as to why Charles De Gaulle's decision to hold peace talks with the FLN was
very unpopular with some french people, as well as the ramifications of that decision.

Before the Independence of Algeria, the French public opinion on how the Algerian situation is
varied. Charles De Gaulle was a known and trusted leader by both the Algerian and French side,
an iconic occurrence after the French’s major discrimination, occupation, and unrighteous
actions in Algeria. De Gaulle used the approach of discussion and peace talks with Ben Bella, the
National Liberation front leader in Algeria as he knew that any tension or unfulfilled promises
would be considered as betrayal. De Gaulle’s perspective is respected, however when looking
at the events from the perspective of the French people, their patriotic thoughts on controlling
Algeria can be understandable, as most of them strongly believed in the importance of Algeria
to maintaining France. At the end of many events occurring in Algeria and France, including
both peace talks, and attacks be a French terrorist group (OAS) under the leadership of Salan,
Algeria is granted independence. The Algerian country is then under the presidential rule of Ben
Bella, French settler become less and any citizens loyal to France are executed.
