Chapter 6 : Acid and Alkali

The pH of Human Skin

The human skin acts as a natural barrier
to fight infection by pathogens. The skin pH
level plays an important role in fighting these
infections.
Our skin has a thin protective layer known
as acid mantle. This layer which is made of a
combination of an oily substance (sebum) and
sweat makes the skin acidic and protects the
skin from the external environment.
