Number System

Number System: Number System is a method of representing Numbers on the Number

Line with the help of a set of Symbols and rules.
These symbols range from 0-9 and are termed as digits.

Number Line:
A Number line is a representation of Numbers with a fixed interval in between on a
straight line

Positive Numbers:Numbers that are represents on the right side of the zero (0) are
termed as Positive Numbers.
Ex:1,2,3,4,5 ………etc
Negative Numbers: Numbers that are represents on the left side of the zero (0) are termed as Negative
Numbers.

Ex:-1,-2,-3……etc.

Types of Numbers
There are several types in Numbers these are:
1.Natural Numbers: Natural Numbers are the most basic type of Numbers that range
from 1 to infinity. These numbers are also called Positive Numbers or Counting
Numbers. Natural Numbers are represented by the symbol N.
Ex:1,2,3,4,5,6,7………etc.
2. Whole Numbers: Whole Numbers are basically the Natural Numbers, but they
also include ‘zero’. Whole numbers are represented by the symbol W.
Ex:0,1,2,3,4…………etc.
3.Integers: Integers are the collection of both whole numbers and negative natural
numbers.
Ex: -3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4…….
a
Fractions: Fractions are the numbers that are written in the form of , where, a
b
belongs to Whole numbers and b belongs to Natural Numbers.Denominator never
can be 0 (zero).
2 3
Ex: , ,………..
3 4
->There is three types in fractions these are:
1.Proper fraction
2.Improper fraction
3.Mixed Fraction
1.Proper Fraction:
A fraction where the numerator is less than the denominator it’s
said to be proper fraction.
2 3 7 5
Ex: 3 , 4 , 9 , 6 …………
2.Improper Fraction:
A fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator, it’s
said to be improper fraction.
3 5
Ex: 2 , 4 ……………
3.Mixed Fraction:
A mixed fraction is combination of natural number and fraction is called
mixed fraction. It is basically improper fraction.
2 3 2 3
Ex:3 , 2 ,4 3 , 1 4 ………………
3 4

Example Problems on fractions:

2 3
1. 3 + 4

4 ( 2 ) +3 (3)
=
12
8+9
= 12
17
= 12

2 3
2. 3 - 4

4 ( 2 ) −3(3)
==
12
8−9
= 12
−1
= 12

Rational Numbers:
Rational numbers are the numbers that can be represented in the fraction
a/b. Here, a and b both are integers and b≠0. All the fractions are form i.e. rational
numbers but not all the rational numbers are fractions.
Ex: 2/5, 0.54, 1/5, 13/4, ...
Irrational Numbers: Irrational numbers are the numbers that can’t be represented in
the form of fractions i.e. they can not be written as a/b.
Example: √2, √3, √.434343, π...
Real and Imaginary Numbers: Real numbers are the numbers that can be
represented in the decimal form. These numbers include whole numbers, integers,
fractions, etc
All the integers belong to Real numbers but all the real numbers do not
belong to the integers.
Imaginary Numbers are all those numbers that are not real numbers.
These numbers when squared will result in a negative number. The √-1 isrepresented
as i. These numbers are also called complex numbers.
Example: √-2, √-5,...
Even Numbers: Given number which is divisible by 2,it’s called as Even
number.
Ex: 2,4,6,8………..
Odd Numbers: Given number which is not divisible by 2 is called odd
numbers.
Ex: 1,3,5,7………….
Prime Numbers: Numbers that do not have any factors other than 1 and the number
itself are termed as Prime Numbers.
Example: 2, 3, 5, 7,...
Note: 2 is even prime number.
Composite Numbers: A number that is divisible by a number other than 1 and the number
itself, is called a composite number.
Example: 4,6,8……….

Face Value and Place Value:

i)The face value of a digit in a numeral is it’s own value at whatever place it may be.

Ex:7896
In given number 8 face value=8
In given number 6 face value=6
In given number 9 face value=9
ii) In a given numeral:
Place value of unit digit = (unit digit) × 1,
Place value of tens digit = (tens digit) × 10,
Place value of hundred digit = (hundred digit) × 100……so on.

Ex: 8927 find place value of 2 ?

Place value of 2 = (2 ×10)
= 20
Problems on Face and Place Values:

I) Find Place and Face value of 2 and 4 in given numerals

a) 85234 b) 234510 c) 3421 d) 562451

e) 45623 f) 54231 g) 874562 h) 23456

i) 23641 j) 925410

II)Find the Place of given each digit of given numeral.

a) 2345 b) 4531 c) 2134 d) 56216

e) 34217 f) 4329 g) 43092 h) 5362

i) 24316 j) 21980

Model 2:
1. Find the difference between place and face value of 2 in 1320

Sol: Face Value of 2 = 2

Place Value of 2 = 2 × 10
= 20
Now,
Place value – face value = 20 – 2
= 18

2. . Find the sum of place and face value of 2 in 1320

Sol:
Face Value of 2 = 2
Place Value of 2 = 2 × 10
= 20
Now,
Place value + face value = 20 + 2
= 22
3. Find the product of place and face value of 2 in 1320

Sol:
Face Value of 2 = 2
Place Value of 2 = 2 × 10
= 20
Now,
Place value × face value = 20 × 2
= 40
4. . Find the division of place and face value of 2 in 1320

Sol:
Face Value of 2 = 2
Place Value of 2 = 2 × 10
= 20
Now,
Place value – face value = 20 / 2
= 10

Exercise:

1.find the difference between place and face value of 3 in 20356.

2.find the product of place and face value of 4,5 in 201465.

3.find sum of place and face value of 2,3,4 in 1273940

4.find the difference between place and face value of 4 in 210456
