The inverted pyramid
WRITING FOR MEDIA
What is the inverted pyramid?
The inverted pyramid
is the standard
structure for a news
story. Information is
written in the order of
importance.
Note:
! The pyramid shape does NOT mean
that the lead and first paragraph are
LONGER.
! It just means that the lead and first
paragraph are MOST IMPORTANT.
Bottom-up cut
Reporters use the inverted pyramid to make
news stories easy to edit. Editors cut the story
from the bottom, knowing that the most
important information is at the top.
In the beginning…
In printed newspapers, stories
need to fit together like the
pieces of a puzzle.
Editors cut sentences and
paragraphs so the stories would
fit.
Now…
The inverted pyramid is still useful. Readers might
only see the first sentence or two if they’re
reading on a watch.
Even when they’re reading on a large screen,
most readers don’t read the whole article. They
must be able to get the main idea quickly.
