Cleaning Up In The Studio
(or ae ‘ouled-Up Faders)
There are problems encountered in a studio
environment which do not occur in the console
checkout area. However, being as resourceful as
we are, we try to “discover” some of these
problems and find reasonable solutions.
Due to cigarette ash, coffee. cake, ete. lor just
the atmosphere). it seems that periodic cleaning
of the console faders is inevitable in a studio.
Following are @ few maintenance hints to heip
you clean up
small foder. Pressing on the knab in the center
will make the wipers fall off the element. If this
‘occurs, cut a % inch strip from an index card.
‘(With the fader at maximum (and removed trom
the top panel), slip the strip in and rida the
wipers slowly ante it, Then return to maximum.

Opening the large fader is done simply by
removing the two screws that hold the cover. To
open the small fader, move the wipers to
minimum and bend the two tabs that sacure the
PC bosrd. Use = small screworiver to pop Ihe
board out of the case (from the rear where the
wires are attached),
Both the large and small faders use a
“Waters” conductive plastic element. Alcohol
‘on 8 cotton swab should be used to clean it. Do
NOT use solvents! Afterwards a lubricant such
18 “Dow Corning 810 Silicone Fluid” should be
applied in the same manner. H the rods are
cleaned, the rear one {it makes contact with a
piece of foam) should also be lubricated. We use
“Rheolub 733” available from: William F. Nye
Inc., Specialty Lubricants, New Bedford, Mass.

‘With small fader st minimum, line up the
board at that end and slowly close til it snaps in
place. Be sure the wipers are on the elemant
Once you are satisfied with the feel and
‘operation, bend the tabs back to hold the board
in place.
Before closing thalarge fader, check the micro
switch to see that it is aligned properly. Also
check the wires sround the group switch tosee
that they are flat against it to allow the fader to fit
properly.
Lastly, check for fader kill (i.e, fader in
minimum position)
