Transforming Sinusoidal Functions

This document covers transformations of sinusoidal functions like sine and cosine. It discusses how changing the amplitude (a), period (k), phase shift (d), and vertical shift (c) in the equations y=asin(k(x-d))+c and y=acos(k(x-d))+c affects the graph of the function. Examples are given to demonstrate finding the amplitude, period, maximum and minimum values, equation of the axis, and range for various transformed sine and cosine functions. Activities are provided to help students check their understanding of transformations.

Graphing Transformations
Process for Graphing Trig Functions - Must show the steps for graphing!!!

1. State the transformations in the order in which they are applied.

2. State beside each, how they affect x and y coordinates of key points.
3. Plot the main points using the period and max/min values (period = 360/k and
max/min = +/-a)
4. Draw the graph with the new period and maximum and minimum values. Be careful of
reflections.
5. Apply the translations left/right and up/down last.
6. Draw the final graph. Label the function.
For each of the following:
Example #1
i) Sketch one cycle (must include the 5 key points)
ii) Identify amplitude, period, max and min values, equation of axis and range for
each.
