Performing Estimation and Basic Calculation

Procedures in Reporting Farm Estimates

There are procedures we need to follow in reporting the estimate of farm
inputs, materials and resources. The procedures are the following:

Have a meeting with Determine the owner’s Find out the

the farm owner plan to his farm estimation farm

If the owner made Submit the result to Estimate the farm

changes on it have a the owner inputs
budgeting or revision

Give the final draft of

Finalize the farm
farm estimation and
estimation and
calculation to the
calculation
owner

What are farm inputs?

Farm inputs are important materials needed in agricultural crop production. It is

important to identify the number or amount of farm inputs needed to minimize the
unnecessary expenses and to maximize profit. Refer to K-12 BEC TLE – Crop
Production Learning Material pp. 40

Seeds – ripened ovules of plants used for sowing

Fertilizers – are any materials or substances added to the soil

to support nutrients and increased fertility of the soil

Insecticides – are used to kill insects.

Farm Labor – these are labor requirements for land preparation, planting and
transplanting of seedlings, plant care, application of fertilizer, weeding, irrigation,
pest control, harvesting and post-harvest activities. (Refer to K-12 BEC TLE – Crop
Production Learning Material pp. 41-43)

Estimating Farm Inputs and Labor Requirements

In estimating farm supplies, it is important to know the condition of the farm

such as the area of land and the needed farm inputs in order to estimate the budget
and to allocate budget correctly.

Example:
Mang Lito has 3 hectares of rice field. In order for him to estimate the needed
farm inputs, he lists down all the needed materials and labor requirements for the
whole production.
Note:
100 kg/ha. of seeds are needed for transplanting method
150 kg/ha. of seeds are needed for direct method
After noting down all the necessary farm inputs, he can now write the amount
for every input. Then, add the amount and he have now the estimated budget of his
farm inputs.

Calculation of Farm Inputs and Labor Requirements

Estimating cost of farm inputs

1. Needed seeds per hectare
Formula:
Total kilo of seeds = kilogram of seeds x area of land

Note:
1 hectare is equivalent to 10, 000 m2 (square meter)
100 kg/ha. of seeds needed for transplanting method
150 kg/ha. of seeds needed for direct method

Given:
Mang Lito has 3 hectares of rice field. He is planning to used direct seeding. How
many kilograms of seeds does he need? How much it cost?

Computation:
Total kilo of seeds = kilogram of seeds x area of land
= 150 kg x 3 hectares
= 450 kg
Using the formula below, determine the total price of seeds to be used.
Given:
Formula:
P25.00 per kilo of seeds
Total seed price = Price of seeds per kilo x total of seeds needed per
Mang Lito has 3 hectares
hectare
Computation:
Total seed price = Price of seeds per kilo x total of seeds needed per
hectare
= P 25.00/kilo x 450 kilo
= P 11, 250.00

2. Total amount of fertilizers needed

Formula:
Total amount of fertilizer = amount
6 of fertilizers x number of kilograms used
Example
Given:
Triple 14 ( 14-14-14 ) unit price per kilo is P 30.00
The amount of 14-14-14 needed in fertilizing plants is 220 kilograms

Computation:
Total amount of fertilizer = amount of fertilizers x number of kilograms used
= P 30.00 x 220
= P 6, 600.00

Estimating Labor Requirements

3. Total amount of salary paid during land preparation

Formula:
Total amount of salary = No. of days labored x No. of worker x amount of
salary/worker

Given:
No. of days labored is 2 days
No. of worker is 2
The amount of salary per worker per day is P 250.00

Computation:
Total amount of salary = No. of days labored x No. of worker x amount of
salary/worker
= 2 x 2 x P 250.00
= P 1, 000.00

4. Total amount of salary during planting

Formula:
Total amount of salary = No. of days labored x No. of worker x amount of
salary/worker

Given:
No. of days labored is 4 days
No. of worker is 3
The amount of salary per worker per day is P 250.00

Computation:
Total amount of salary=No. of days labored x No. of worker x
amount of salary/worker
= 4 x 3 x P 250.00
= P 3, 000.00

Formula:
Total amount of salary = No. of days labored x No. of worker x amount of
salary/worker

5. Total amount of salary in applying fertilizer

Given:
No. of day labored is 1 day
No. of worker is 5
7
The amount of salary per worker per day is P 280.00
Computation:
Total amount of salary =No. of days labored x No. of worker x
amount of salary/worker
= 1 x 5 x 250
= P 1, 250.00
6. Total amount of salary during spraying of pesticides
Formula:
Total amount of salary = salary of worker per day x total no. of days

Given:
Salary is P 250.00 per day
Total no. of days worked is 1

Computation:
Total amount of salary = salary of worker per day x total no. of
days
= P250.00 x 1
= P250.00

7. Total amount of salary during weeding

Formula:
Total amount of salary = salary of worker per day x total no. of worker

Given:
Salary is P 250.00 per day
Total no. of worker is 7

Computation:
Total amount of salary = salary of worker per day x no. of
worker
= P250.00 x 7
= P1, 750.00
8. Estimated cost of pesticide used for spraying
Formula:
Total amount of salary = cost of pesticide per bottle x no. of pesticide/hectare x land
area

Note:
Land area is measured using square meter (m2)
10, 000 m2 is equal to 1 hectare

Given:
Price of pesticide per bottle is p 350.00
No. of bottle to be used per hectare is 1.5
The total number of area of land is 2.6 hectare

Computation:
Total amount of salary = cost of pesticide per bottle x no. of
pesticide/hectare x land area
= 350 x 1.5 x 2.6
= P 1, 365.00
