INTRODUCTION

Work Immersion is one of the course requirements for graduation. A Senior

High School student has to undergo Work Immersion in an industry that directly
relates to the student’s post-secondary goal. Through Work Immersion, the students
are exposed to and become familiar with work-related environment related to their
field of specialization to enhance their competence. Specifically, the students are able
to: (i) gain relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts
and workers; (ii)appreciate the importance and application of the principles and
theories taught in school;(iii) enhance their technical knowledge and skills; (iv) enrich
their skills in communications and human relations; and (v)develop good work habits,
attitudes, appreciation, and respect for work. These prepare them to meet the needs
and challenges of employment or higher education after graduation.
Academic institutions are faced with challenges particularly on the
skills they produced which do not match the needs of the industry. A significant
number of graduates today are unable to fill the job openings due to job-skill
mismatch. A great number of these skills found lacking by companies are taught in
the academe that is, technical, human resource and conceptual skills. In addition to
that, these same skills can also be reinforced through on-the-job training programs.
On-the-job training (OJT)programs are course requirements providing an opportunity
to apply the theories, principles and ideas learned in the academe under supervision.
These training programs expose the students to work realities which will ideally hone
their skills and prepare them once they get out of the university or college. A
study conducted by the People Management Association of the Philippines
(PMAP)in2006, emphasized the importance of an effective on-the-job training
program. Achievement of the OJT program objectives ensures the
possibility of good performer graduates. The opposite will most likely produce
poor performer graduates thus, promoting job-skill mismatch. One of the goals of the
K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners the competencies, work
ethic, and values relevant to pursuing further education and/or joining the world of
work. To achieve greater congruence between basic education and the
nation’s development targets, Work Immersion, a required subject has been
incorporated into the curriculum. This subject will provide learners with opportunities:
(i)to become familiar with the work place; (ii) for employment simulation; and (iii) to
apply their competencies in areas of specialization/applied subjects in authentic work
environments.
Work immersion is a key feature in the Senior High School
Curriculum (SHS) and refers to the part of that consists of 80 hours of
hands-on experience or work simulation which Grades 11 and 12 students
will undergo to expose them to the actual workplace setting and to enrich
the competencies provided by the school under the supervision of the
School Head and the designated personnel of the partner. It is the
counterpart of the internship programs in the tertiary level. It also enables
learners to become familiar with the workplace, simulate work, and apply
their competencies in the authentic work environments. Further,
strengthened by the issuance of the DepEd Order No. 30, s. 2017, the
program aims to help develop life and career skills and prepare learners to
decide regarding post-secondary education or employment.
What is the important of work immersion?

The positive learning gains suggest that work immersion enables

the students to acquire and develop the skills of teamwork,
communication, attendance and punctuality, productivity and
resilience, initiative and proactivity, judgment and decision making,
dependability and reliability, attitude, and professionalism.

INTRODUCTION

With all the aspects involved like economics, health and education, in
our country has been experiencing big changes lately. For they say that
change is only the constant thing in the world. In terms of education, the
Philippine educational system has been developed to provide the learner’s
the best. It happened the moment we changed our won curriculum system
from the basic form to widely use one K -12 curriculum. And just recently,
the Department of Education (DepEd) has released the guidelines for the
conduct of work immersion activities for senior high school students in the
country. Work immersion is a key feature in the Senior High curriculum
(SHS) and refers to the part of that consists of 80 hours of hands-on
experience or work simulation which Grades 11 and 112 students will
undergo to expose them to the actual workplace setting and to enrich the
competencies provided by the school under the supervision of the School
Head and the designated personnel of the Partner. Work immersion is the
counterpart of the internship programs in the tertiary level. The said
learning experience that the students can get from it which can range from
80 to 320 hours will surely enable and help students as they familiarize
themselves with the workplace thus experience workplace simulation and
apply their competencies in areas of specialization. The completion of work
immersion is a prerequisite to graduation under the K-12 program. This is a
first rate of the part of DepEd, since young people like to explore and to
connect with the people, this work immersion will provide them to acquire
relevant skills by performing in actual work setting. The importance of work
immersion must be seen as vital point of giving students a venue to
improve themselves through experiencing real stuff firsthand. This is the
very highlight of the Senior High program. It helps student to acquire
knowledge and experience that can help them grow as professional
individuals. Furthermore, this program provides opportunities to go through
the actual methodologies of a specific job using the real tools, equipment
and documents. In effect, the work place becomes a practice what we have
learn from academy.
