Q. (a) Define and explain the following properties of fluid

1
1. Viscosity
2. Specific gravity
3. Capillarity 06

(b) Find the total pressure and depth of centre of pressure on a triangular
plate base 2 m and height 3 m which is immersed in water in such a way
that the plane makes an angle of 600 with the free surface of water. The
base of plate is parallel to and 2.5 m deep from water surface. 06

(c) Determine the viscosity of a liquid having kinematic viscosity 6 stokes

Q. (a) The space between two square flat parallel plates is filled with oil. Each
2
side of the plate is 600 mm. The thickness of the oil film is 12.5 mm. The
upper plate, which moves at 2.5 m/s requires a force of 98 N to maintain
the speed. If specific gravity of the oil is 0.95. Determine
i) The dynamic viscosity of the oil in poise and
ii) The kinematic viscosity of oil in stokes 05

(b) Determine the total pressure on a circular plate of diameter 1.5 m is

placed vertically in water, in such a way that the center of the plate is 3.0
m below the free surface of water. Find the position of center of pressure.
Calculate the same results if the centre of the plate is 8.0 m below the free
05
surface of liquid. Comment on the results.

(c) Classify different manometers. Explain with neat sketch the U- tube
manometer and state how to measure the unknown pressure. 05
Q. (a) Explain the following terms with neat sketches
3
i) Meta-center and meta-centric height
ii) Stability of Floating and submerged bodies
iii) Steady and unsteady flow
08
iv) Laminar and turbulent flow

(b) What is Venturimeter? Write the expression to calculate the rate of flow
07
of fluid using venturimeter.

OR

Q. (a) A block of wood of specific gravity 0.8 floats in water. Determine the
4
metacentric height if its size is 3 m (long) x 2 m (wide) x 1 m (depth). 08
State whether the equilibrium is stable or unstable.

(b) A horizontal venturimeter with inlet and throat diameters 30 cm and 15

cm respectively, is used to measure the flow of water. The reading of
07
differential manometer connected to the inlet and the throat is 20 cm of
mercury. Determine the rate of flow. Take Cd = 0.98
