Overview - X6 Chassis Upgrade to Gen 7
• An X6 upgraded to a Gen 7 chassis is non-reversible - downgrade is not supported
1. FOS v9.0 or later version needs to be loaded on the chassis
2. A non-reversible upgrade of the Gen 6 CP blade FPGA firmware is required via FOS (CP6 -> CP6+). FOS 9.0 upgrade
also becomes non-reversible
3. Both Gen 6 CR blades needs to be swapped out and replaced by Gen 7 CR blades (no mixed CR blades in a chassis)
4. PID changes are required to devices attached to an X6 chassis that gets upgraded to an X7 – unified 10-bit addressing in
Gen 7 (manual or automatic)

Current Problems with Knock-off and Counterfeit Optics
• We have uncovered several bad actors that are selling non-genuine optics in the
marketplace

• Affected customers are exposed to poor signal integrity and availability issues,
causing downtime, missed SLAs and support calls
– We have had support calls via our OEMs from unhappy customers who had weak signal
strength and disconnected links, causing downtime for applications
– Upon root cause analysis, we have found that the optics were actually crude fakes

• In response, we have implemented “Secure Optics” for Gen 7

• Secure Optics will protect our customers and OEMs from fraud and will ensure
optimal performance and availability for Brocade SAN fabrics

Overview – Secure Optics for Gen 7

• Brocade is introducing Secure Optics for Gen 7 platforms with the

FOS 9.0 release
• What are Secure Optics?
– Brocade is introducing new Secure Optics with FOS 9.0 to ensure that only
genuine or qualified optics are used with Brocade Gen 7 products
– The security measures are implemented on a system level, involving the optics,
FOS, and the platform hardware
– Sophisticated authentication and software algorithms are used to detect the use
of Brocade secure optics from third-party counterfeit versions
– In previous generations, counterfeiters and knock-off vendors were copying registers from
genuine Brocade optics so that the knock-off optics presented themselves to FOS as genuine
Brocade optics
– For Gen 7, Secure Optics feature an encrypted challenge-response scheme, and knock-off
vendors can’t simply copy our registers

Implementation – Secure Optics
• New secure optics versions are implemented for existing 32G and 16G optics
– There will be new part numbers for 32G and 16G secure optics
– 32G SFP+ (SWL, LWL 10km), 32G QSFP (100m, 2km)
– 16G SFP+ (SWL, LWL 10km)
– 10G SFP+ (SWL, LWL 10km)
– 32Gbps ELWL 25km optic
– Note: There will also be qualified 32G and 16G DWDM Secure Optics available from SmartOptics
• All Gen 7 products will only use new secure optics (Gen 7 ICL, 64G, 32G, 16G, 10G).
Non-secure optics will not work in Gen 7 products

– Gen 7 8-slot and 4-slot chassis (X7-8, X7-4) (w/ Gen 7 ICL QSFP)
– Upgraded Gen 6 System w/ FC32-X7-48 (w/ secure 32G and 16G optics)
– Gen 7 System w/ FC64-48 (w/ secure 64G and 32G optics)
– Gen 7 Midrange switch G720 (w/ secure 64G and 32G optics)
• All Gen 6 / Gen 5 directors and switches (including G620v2 and G630v2) will continue
to work with existing non-secure optics
– Non-secure 32G optics will continue to be offered for some time for Gen 6 and prior products
– New Secure Optics will also work fine in Gen 6 and prior products

EOL of Existing 32Gbps, 16Gbps and 10Gbps Optics Part Numbers

• EOL notices for existing non-secure 32Gbps, 16Gbps and 10Gbps optics will be
issued in the future
– Non-secure optic part numbers are not required
• New Secure Optics are fully compatible with the older platforms and available for the same price
– Existing Gen 6 and Gen 5 platforms will be shipped with Secure Optics
• Gen 6 and Gen 5 platforms (including G620v2 and G630v2) shipped with Secure Optics will still
accept non-secure optics if plugged in
– This transition will simplify things for our partners (e.g. fewer part numbers to quote, stock,
forecast and keep track of)
– Exact timing still TBD

Fabric Notification
Congestion signals and notifications enables automatic mitigation and recovery
Over-utilized server
• Brocade continuously monitors your SAN health
and performance
• Switch hardware and FOS detects SAN
congestion and triggers notifications
• Fabric sends notifications to both end devices of
the congested flow so they can take action
• Devices receiving notification may adopt one of
the actions:
• Pinpoint congestion point
• Slow down requests
• Reset to recover
• Failover to alternate path
• Fully supported on Gen 7 platforms and partially
supported on Gen 6 platforms
