General Instruction:
(1) There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D
and Section E.
(3) All the sections are compulsory.
(4) Section A contains sixteen questions, twelve MCQ and four Assertion Reasoning
based of 1 mark each, Section B contains five questions of two marks each, Section C
contains seven questions of three marks each, Section D contains two case study-
based questions of four marks each and Section E contains three long answer
questions of five marks each.
(5) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one
question in Section B, one question in Section C, one question in each CBQ in Section
D and all three questions in Section E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in
such questions.

22 Derive an expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor. If a c 3

23 On the basis of electron drift, derive an expression for resistivity of an 3
conductor in terms of number density of free electrons and relaxation time.
On what factors does resistivity of a conductor depend?
24 (a) State the principle of a transformer. 3
(b) Explain with the help of a well labelled diagram, its working and obtain
the expression for output ac voltage in terms of number of turns in primary
coil ( NP ) and secondary coil ( NS ).
25 A ray of light is refracted by a glass prism. Obtain an expression for the 3
refractive index of the glass in term of the angle of prism A and the angle
of minimum deviation δm.
26 State Einstein’s photoelectric equation explaining the symbols used. 3
Light of frequency ν incident is on a photosensitive surface. A graph of the
square of the maximum speed of the electrons (v2max ) vs. ν is obtained as
shown in the figure.
Using Einstein’s photoelectric equation, obtain expressions for (i) Planck’s
constant(ii) work function of the given photosensitive material in terms of
parameters l, n and mass of the electron m.

To a distant observer, the light appears to be coming from somewhere


below the ground. The observer naturally assumes that light is being
reflected from the ground, say, by a pool of water near the tall object. Such
inverted images of distant tall objects cause an optical illusion to the
observer. This phenomenon is called mirage. This type of mirage is
especially common in hot deserts. Based on the above facts, answer the

30 When the diode is forward biased, it is found that beyond forward voltage 4
V = Vk, called knee voltage, the conductivity is very high. At this value of
battery biasing for p-n junction,the potential barrier is overcome and the
current increases rapidly with increase in forward voltage. When the diode
is reverse biased, the reverse bias voltage produces a very small current
about a few microamperes which almost remains constant with bias. This
small current is reverse saturation current.

31 (a) Using Gauss Law, derive an expression for the Electric Field Intensity 5
at any point outside and inside of a uniformly charged spherical shell of
radius R and charge density σ C/m2.
(b) A uniformly charged spherical shell of 2.5m in diameter has a surface
charge density of 100µC/m2. Calculate the
i) Charge on the sphere
ii) Total electric flux passing through the sphere.

i)Derive the relation for ξeq when two cells of EMF ξ1 and ξ2 are connected in
parallel combination.

32 (i)State Ampere’s circuital law and using it find magnetic field due to 5
straight infinite current carrying wire.

(iii)A long straight wire in the horizontal plane carries a current of 15A in
north to south direction. Find the magnitude and direction of magnetic field
at a point 2.5m east of the wire.

(i)Derive the expression of force between two infinitely long parallel current
carrying conductors, hence define one ampere of current.
(ii)A square loop of side 20 cm carrying current of 1A is kept near an
infinite long straight wire carrying a current of 2A in the same plane as
shown in the figure. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the net force
exerted on the loop due to the current carrying conductor.

33 (a) State Huygens’s principle. With the help of a diagram, show how a 5
plane wave is reflected from a surface. Hence verify the law of reflection.
(b)What is the shape of wave front in each of the following cases
(i) Light diverging from a point source.
(ii)The portion of the wave-front of light from a distant star intercepted by
the earth.

OR

(i)Draw a labelled ray diagram to show the image formation by an


astronomical telescope in normal adjustment.

(ii) Define magnifying power of an astronomical telescope in normal


adjustment (i,e, when the final image is formed at infinity).

(iii) A small telescope has an objective lens of focal length 144cm and an
eyepiece of focal length 6cm.What is the magnifying power of the
telescope? What is the separation between objective and eyepiece?
