of the Government of the Philippines. However, prior approval of the government
agency or office wherein the work is created shall be necessary for the exploitation
of such work for a profit. Such agency or office may, among other things, impose as
a condition the payment of royalties.
Borrowed materials (e.g., songs, stories, poems, pictures, photos, brand names,

Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the processes that occur when the continental plate and oceanic
plate collide.
2. Determine the consequences of colliding continental plate and oceanic plate.
3. Explain the processes that occur when two oceanic plates collide.
4. Determine the consequences of two colliding oceanic plates.
5. Explain the processes that occur if two continental plates collide.
Key Concepts
• Convergent Plate Boundaries
Interactions along convergent boundaries involve the collision of pairs of
plates where oceanic lithosphere is often destroyed at subduction zones.
Convergent boundaries come in three varieties depending upon the type of crust
or plate that is involved across a subduction zone.
The figure above shows two crusts underwater, so they are both oceanic
crusts. There is a boundary line between the crusts, a trench. It is a crack on the
crust which is underwater.
The convergence of two oceanic crusts results in some similar events
compared to the first type of convergence. Tsunamis may be formed.
Earthquakes may happen. There is also subduction because one plate is denser
than the other. The front part of the subducting plate becomes magma upon
reaching the mantle. Then it builds up pressure due to heat, pushes the crust
above it, forming a volcano. This is a continuous process. Since the plates are
moving, the volcano will move with the plate. It becomes extinct when it is no
longer above the magma deposit in the mantle. A new volcano will then be formed.
This series of volcanoes is called volcanic island arc since it is surrounded by
water.
This explains why the Philippines is mostly loaded with volcanoes. The
different islands were believed to have originated from the convergence of two
oceanic crusts.
Guide Questions:
1. What type of plate is Plate A? Explain.
2. What type of plate is Plate B? Explain.
3. Describe what happens to Plate A as it collides with Plate B. Why does it happen?
Guide Questions:
1. Do plates A and B belong to the same type of plate? Explain.
2. What are the geologic processes or events that will possibly occur because of this
plate movement?
3. What geologic features might be formed at the surface of plate A?
4. If the edge of plate A suddenly flicks upward, a large amount of water may
displaced, what could be formed at the surface of the ocean?

When two continental crusts converge, both crusts exert a pressure pushing
each other. As the ground rises, a tall landform is created.
1. Is there a tendency of eruption?
2. Do the plates in this activity are of the same densities?
3. What geologic process does not occur in this type of convergence?
Reflection
Read and analyze the situation below and answer the question that follows on
a separate sheet of paper.
