Safety Work Instructions for Sandblasting in Industry

Safety work instructions for sandblasting in an industrial setting are crucial to

protect workers from potential hazards. Below is a guideline for creating such
instructions.

1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

All workers must wear appropriate PPE at all times, including:

1. Full-body protective clothing.

2. Respirators with appropriate filters for airborne contaminants.
3. Safety goggles or face shields.
4. Hearing protection (earplugs or earmuffs).
5. Steel-toed safety boots.
6. Gloves designed for abrasive handling.

2. Equipment Inspection:

Before each use inspect all sandblasting equipment, hoses, nozzles, and safety
devices for signs of damage, wear or malfunction. Address any issues immediately.

3. Work Area Preparations:

1. Establish a designated sandblasting area, clearly marked and restricted to

authorized personnel only.

2. Ensure proper ventilation or exhaust systems to remove dust and

contaminants from the work area.
3. Remove all flammable materials and substances from the vicinity.

4. Training:

1. All personnel operating sandblasting equipment must receive thorough

training on its safe operation, including emergency procedures.
2. Train workers to recognize the hazards associated with abrasive materials
such as silica dust exposure and how to mitigate these risks.

5. Respiratory Protection:

1. Perform fit tests for respirators to ensure a proper seal on the wearer's face.
2. Workers should undergo regular medical evaluations to assess their fitness
for wearing respirators.

6. Compressed Air Safety:

1. Ensure that compressed air systems are properly maintained and equipped
with pressure relief valves and pressure gauges.
2. Keep hoses and connections in good condition to prevent air leaks or
ruptures.

7. Material Handling:

1. Store abrasive materials in a dry, well-ventilated area away from heat

sources and open flames.
2. Use appropriate containers for abrasive material storage and handling.

8. Nozzle and Equipment Handling:

1. Do not point the blasting nozzle at anyone or any part of the body.
2. Never bypass safety interlocks or tamper with equipment safety features.

9. Emergency Procedures:

1. Provide clear instructions for emergency shutdown procedures.

2. Ensure that all workers know the location and proper use of emergency eye
wash stations and safety showers.

10. First Aid and Medical Assistance:

1. Maintain a well-stocked first-aid kit in the sandblasting area.

2. Instruct workers on how to seek immediate medical attention in case of
injury or exposure.

11. Housekeeping:

1. Keep the work area clean and free of debris to prevent tripping hazards.
2. Regularly clean up accumulated abrasive materials and dust.

12. Environmental Considerations:

 Comply with all environmental regulations regarding waste disposal,

especially concerning the containment and disposal of abrasive materials and
contaminants.

13. Safety Signage:

 Install warning signs and labels in the sandblasting area to remind workers
of safety precautions and hazards.

14. Regular Safety Reviews:

 Conduct regular safety meetings to discuss best practices, review safety

procedures and address any concerns raised by workers.

15. Documentation:

 Maintain records of equipment inspections, training and incident reports.

 Remember that safety should always be a top priority in any industrial
process and these instructions should be adapted and expanded upon to suit
your specific sandblasting operations and the safety regulations applicable in
your region.
