1. INTRODUCTION
With the advert of digital power measurement, monitoring and protection system, the requirement for the
burden on the current transformer has also significantly been reduced. With the reduction of the vurden
requirement on the current transformer, the current transformer can be manufactured in a smaller physical
dimension.

In view of the above, it would be prudent to supply current transformer with enough burden to drive the
required device which is connected to.

The calculation below indicates the required burden for the connection to a modern electronic measurement
device.

2. CALCULATION OF CT BURDEN

I) CT BURDEN CALCULATION FOR TRANSFOMER FEEDER (J01 AND J14)

PROTECTION CT PARAMETER = 750/1A, 5P20 7.5VA PROTECTION RELAY CT,

Ring-Core type CT for GIS-Switchgear, foil-insulated
Transformation-Ratio CT: 750/1 A
CT-Core : 750 A / 1 A / 5P 20 / 7.5 VA
Rat. Permanent Overcurrent Factor (thermal): 1.2 x Ir
Rat. Shorttime Withstand Current: 25 kA
Rat. Short-Circuit Duration: 3 s
Frequency 50 Hz
P543 Re validate with
MICOM P540 range < 0.15 VA P543 relay

AMMETER < 0.6VA

INTERPOSING CT 1/1A < 2VA

Maximum wiring length from the CT to the electronic device and back to the CT
=2 X 5 metre

CT wiring cable size is 4mm2

Maximum copper conductor resistance = 4.61Ω/km (According to manufacturer technical haracteristics)

The electrical resistivity of copper conductor @75 dec C

= 0.0184 ohm.mmsq/m X 1.2161 (@75 deg C correction factor)
= 0.0224 ohm.mmsq/m

Resistance of the wiring lead

Rf = ρ X L / A

Where Rf resistance of wire lead

Ρ electrical resistivity
L Length of wiring lead
A Cross Sectional area of conductor
Therefore, Rf = (0.0224 ) X (2 X 5) / 4
= 0.056Ω

The burden due to the wiring lead

To be corrected as I2
P = 12 X Rf
= (1)2 X 0.056
= 0.056 VA To be corrected as
0.15VA

In total for the proposed parts,

= 0.056VA + 0.015VA + 0.6VA + 2VA
= 2.806VA (Which is lesser than 7.5VA of CT

CL X CT PARAMETER = 750/1A, CLX, Vk >= 90V, Imag <= 150mA, Rct <= 0.6ohm

Where Rf resistance of wire lead
Ρ electrical resistivity
L Length of wiring lead
A Cross Sectional area of conductor

Therefore, Rf = (0.0224 ) X (2 X 5) / 4
= 0.056Ω

Vk = (50 / In) + (If / N) (Rct + Rf) Basis of this formula

to be submitted

Vk = Knee Point voltage

In = Rated secondary current
If = Maximum primary current under fault condition
N = current transformer ratio
Rct = Secondary CT resistance (By manufacturer)
Rf = resistance of wire lead
Where
In = 1A
If = 25000A (25KA)
N = 750
Rct = 0.6 Ohm
Rf = 0.056 Ohm

Vk = (50 / In) + (If / N)(Rct + Rf)

= (50 / 1) + (25000 / 750)(0.6 + 0.056)
= 70.18

The proposed knee point voltage for the current transformer is 90V which is suffice than the calculated knee
point of 70.18V

3. CONCLUSION
From the above calculation, it shows that the current transformer with the proposed burdens for 750/1A ratio
is more than sufficient to drive the devices connected to the Current Transfomers.
