PERMANENT MANDIBULAR LATERAL INCISOR

INTRODUCTION

 Mandibular lateral incisor is very similar to mandibular central incisor.

 It is slightly larger than the mandibular central incisor

CHRONOLOGY
First evidence of calcification 3-4 months
Enamel completed 4-5 years
Eruption 7-8 years
Root completed 10 years

LABIAL ASPECT

 Geometric form-Trapezoidal
Mesial outline  straight, longer than distal outline
 Mesioincisal angle-sharp
 Mesial contact area- In the incisal third

Distal outline  Slightly convex

 Distoincisal angle-rounded
 Distal contact area- In the incisal third, but more cervical
to mesial contact area

Incisal outline  Formed by incisal ridge

 Incisal ridge-slopes in a distal direction
 Labial surface-smooth, flattened incisally

Cervical outline  Semicircular with convexity towards root

Labial surface 

ROOT

LINGUAL ASPECT

 Geometric outline-trapezoidal
 Crown converges lingually

Mesial, Distal and  Similar

incisal outlines

Lingual surface  Cingulum -not prominent and offset to distal

 Lingual fossa-shallow and smooth
 Marginal ridges-relatively well formed
MESIAL ASPECT

 Geometric outline-Wedge /triangular shaped

Labial outline  straight at cervical third and slopes lingually to incisal

ridge
 Height of labial contour-cervical 3rd
Lingual outline  Concavoconvex
 Height of lingual contour-cervical 3rd
Cervical line  curves incisally

Incisal outline  Incisal ridge is placed lingual to the root axis

 Crown inclined lingually on root base.
 Mesial surface-longer than distal
DISTAL ASPECT

 Geometric outline-Wedge /triangular shaped

 Curvature of cervical line is 1mm shorter
 Shorter than mesial surface
INCISAL ASPECT
 Geometric form -Oval
 Wider labiolingually than mesiodistally
 Bilaterally asymmetrical
 Incisal ridge curves distally and is at an angle to line bisecting labiolingually
 Cingulum off centre to the distal
ROOT

 Number-single
 Labial aspect-conical with a blunt apex
 Proximal aspects-root outline straight in middle and cervical third, tapers in apical
third.
 Lingual taper seen
 Developmental depressions seen mesially and distally and is deeper distally.
