Manitobas Chartered Accountants

Since 1886, Chartered Accountants have played a pivotal role in shaping Manitobas economic and cultural fibre
Over the past 125 years, CAs have used their strategic thinking, business insight, financial expertise and leadership to benefit countless organizations. From the arts to sports, from business to charity, from the past to the present, CAs have made and continue to make decisions that matter around the world and in their communities. In our communities. In Manitoba. First presented in 2001, the Chartered Accountants of Manitobas Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes sustained distinction in service to the profession, career and community which brings honour to the profession. Only one Lifetime Achievement Award may be presented each year. Below are the five recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award who became CAs in the 1940s and 1950s. Some of the uniquely Manitoba institutions they have helped to grow and shape include the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Winnipeg Football Club, the universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba, Cercle Molire Inc. of St. Boniface Theatre Company, Telpay Incorporated, and the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Bills entrepreneurial spirit led him to recognize an opportunity to provide payroll services to businesses and he founded Comcheq Services Limited in 1968. In 1993, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce recognized that it would be easier to acquire Comcheq rather than continue to compete with it and the transaction was completed. Never one to rest on his laurels, Bill started another company. Telpay Incorporated concentrated on telephonic payment processing for consumers before the large commercial banks were even in that arena. He was President from 1993 until 2001 and remains involved as Chair. Bill has a love of and strong commitment to the cultural component of Winnipeg. He led a successful movement to turn Winnipegs historic former Bank of Commerce building into a multi-use non-profit centre and has supported the restoration of a number of other heritage buildings. He has also served on the Board of the Winnipeg Art Gallery and as Chair or President for numerous organizations including: the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, 389 Main Street. Heritage Corporation (Millennium Centre), the City of Winnipeg Millennium Council, and the Institute for Canadian Studies. Bill received his CA designation in 1954 and was elected an FCA in 1988. He was inducted into the Order of Canada in 1999 and was last years recipient of the Institutes Lifetime Achievement Award.
